So this was supposed to be my "back-to-bloggin" post where I described what it's like starting a new job in a big city, at a major newspaper. My first day went pretty well, but like all things in my life, the good tends to be outweighed by the bad. So here I'll let you in on a little slice of what's been going on today.
It's very nearly the worst day of my life.
And it's only 2:30 p.m.
Today was my second day of work at the San Antonio Express-News. I had to be there at 10 a.m. I woke up at 8, had breakfast, showered, dressed and was out the door by 8:35. I'd be there in plenty of time.
I was stoked about getting to work on time, since yesterday I was late (Mapquest gave me wrong directions). So I'm halfway there, just driving through New Braunfels, when my ABS light comes on, then my airbag light, then my radio shut off............. the ALTERNATOR!
The signs were there, so I started driving cautiously, just hoping I'd make it to work. After about a mile, my gauges got stuck and the car started hopping. I saw that the next exit was a rest area and pulled into it right away.
The car died, and I was stranded. After numerous phone calls, several long waits and an exciting tow truck ride (my car was hitched to the same truck that was already towing a Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty), I'm sitting at the Rod East VW Dealership in San Antonio.... I've just received the estimate.
$350 for a new alternator, $150 for a new battery, $200 for labor. Plus tax. That's right, over $700 and I didn't even make it to work. Maybe someone can send me a sandwich. I haven't eaten anything since this morning, and I won't be able to feed myself for a while.
