Asians abducted
Fallout of drug war: police
By DEAN PRITCHARD, STAFF REPORTER
Two Winnipeg men are in hospital in stable condition after they were abducted and beaten in what police say was the fallout of a drug war between rival Asian gangs. City police arrested three suspects and were searching for two more yesterday.
Police have charged 30-year-old Viet Chung, Peter Chung, 32, and Koachay Thongsakhom, 26, with two counts each of kidnapping and aggravated assault.
The victims have been identified as Chi Kien Dao, 21, and Hue Troung, 20.
Police spokeswoman Const. Shelly Glover said Dao and Troung were in a Logan Avenue restaurant Friday evening when they became embroiled in a dispute with members of a rival gang.
"There was a bit of a brawl between the two factions and (the victims) were taken away by the other faction," said Glover, who would not identify the restaurant.
Friends of the victims contacted police after receiving phone calls demanding a large ransom for their return, Glover said.
'Around the clock'
Police found the victims Sunday night in northwest Winnipeg. They were suffering numerous serious injuries.
Troung's brother said yesterday family members had not yet had a chance to visit him in hospital because police were interviewing him.
"I heard he's doing OK," the brother said.
Glover said members of the police gang unit were working "around the clock" to round up suspects in the abduction and described the investigation as difficult.
"When the criminal element is involved, they aren't necessarily as forthcoming with police as we would like them to be," she said.
Arrest warrants have been issued for Justin Rivera, 24, and Rainier Santos, 28.
Rivera is described as Asian in appearance, 5-foot-9, about 205 pounds with a stocky build. He has short black hair, with a pock-marked face and the letter J tattooed on his left forearm.
Santos is described as Asian in appearance, 5-foot-11, 187 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.
"These two males are to be considered very dangerous," Glover said. "If they are seen, call police. Do not approach them."
Glover said violence among Asian drug gangs appears to be escalating. "We are very concerned about this trend," she said.
