nation: The Åland Islands
name: Malin Alexandra Petersson
nickname(s): She is sometimes called Alex by her closest friends, but new nicknames are warmly welcomed as long as she doesn't see them as offensive as Malli which was given to her by her Finnish acquaintances.
age: 21
date of birth: 9th June, 1988
hometown: Mariehamn, the Åland Islands
occupation: Malin works as a nurse at the Florence Memorial Hospital, so you are very likely going to find her there, keeping the place in order with an iron fist. She studied to become a nurse in the Degree Programme in Nursing in Salo, Finland.
residence: Currently she resides in the New Brampton suburb, in a small house of her own.
family: Charlotta Petersson (40), Malin's mother, also known as the sister of deceased Svea Oxenstierna, is originally from Sweden, but moved to the Åland Islands when she met Paul Petersson and nowadays lives in Kristinestad (Kristiinankaupunki) in western Finland while Malin's father, Paul Petersson (41), still resides on the Åland Islands. Malin has a cousin who also lives in Liberty, but she hasn't got the chance to meet him yet even though that was partly why she moved to the United States in the first place. She only has a vague memory of a boy the same age as her.
first impression: "I will try harder next time whatever I've done wrong, please don't kill me? Ma'am?"
TEN TRUE FACTS AND A SECRET.
1. Malin's childhood in Mariehamn perhaps wasn't the most peaceful. The pregnancy had been unplanned and both Charlotta and Paul were rather young when Malin was born, but they still got married and tried to raise their child the best they could. They didn't have much money and Charlotta had to stay home to look after Malin while Paul worked overtime. It was causing stress to both adults; Charlotta was stubborn enough to refuse to ask for more money from her family, which resulted in a lot of fights about the subject.
2. After a few years the situation just got worse and Charlotta and Paul couldn't get along most of the time, so Malin was constantly exposed to heavy fights and arguments. It all became a complete disaster when Malin reached the rebellious age of 13, so eventually Charlotta and Paul divorced. This wasn't an easy decision, of course, and after a heated custody dispute Malin was ordered to live with her mother, who wanted to leave the Åland Islands behind her and move to Finland. Naturally, Malin wasn't so happy about the decision as she liked Sweden more, but she couldn't do much about it; the mother and the daughter moved to Kristinestad.
3. The reason why Charlotta insisted on moving away from the Åland Islands was partly because Malin got into trouble with drugs; the parents didn't pay any attention to her and she became angry and found herself wrong kind of a company - by the time Charlotta and Paul noticed there was something wrong with their daughter, who had started skipping school and disappearing somewhere for hours, she was already pretty deep in cannabis. The parents freaked out and contacted the school; immediate actions were taken and Malin was able to break the habit. She has never enjoyed the taste of alcohol.
4. Malin occasionally calls her mother to hear how she's doing, but she's closer to her father in every way even though she has inherited her stubbornness from Charlotta. Charlotta and Malin diverged in bad terms when Malin moved to study in Salo, and since then they've been bitter towards each other about various things; Malin hopes to make a peace between them some day, but it doesn't seem to be possible at the moment. However, Malin visits Paul on every holiday and calls him regularly.
5. Malin cherishes her origins and keeps the Swedish culture close to her heart at all times. She considers herself an Ålander, and although she can speak Finnish moderately well as that was necessary to be able to study in the school she wanted, she still insisted on talking Swedish at home and with all her friends and relatives. She will definitely correct people if they think she's a Finn (although technically she is).
6. Growing up on the Åland Islands and then later in Finland has made Malin very nature friendly. Her favorite way of killing time is watching TV programs about strange happenings of nature in the world, and National Geographic arrives to her through mail regularly. She also loves long walks in the woods, on the beach or, well, anywhere near the nature, really. That's why she's very worried about the global warming and tries to make people understand why they should use public transport and recycling; she follows her own advice the best she can. Malin also has a passionate love for all kinds of small animals.
7. Malin is very sporty and likes all kinds of sports, but mostly follows football, biking and swimming on the TV and newspapers. Her father was the coach of Mariehamn's girls' football team, so Malin was easily absorbed in the game. She used to play in the same team which her father trained and she actually has some talent, but she stopped playing football after moving to the United States. She is still keeping herself in shape and often goes to run in the nearby park or just trains at home. She's a good swimmer, too, and she also enjoys sailing - she comes from an archipelago, after all, and often spent her summers sailing around the islands with her parents.
8. As a hopeless romantic, Malins spends a lot of time reading romance novels, watching romantic movies and dreaming. She believes in the power of love and that it will save everyone in the end. She has dated quite a few men and women in the past, but is currently single and searching for a new relationship. One could almost say that she's "in love with love", so she's changing the object of her interest all the time.
9. Malin keeps her house clean and her things in order. She doesn't like chaos at all and this also applies to her workplace; all the other nurses and doctors have to listen to her nagging if their desks are messy, and she likes to boss people around about various other things as well. This annoys a lot of people, but Malin doesn't really care because she thinks nothing would happen if she didn't tell them what to do. She doesn't take critique well herself, however, and snaps easily if somebody dares to imply she's wrong.
10. Malin's rational and considerate personality doesn't allow her to give up in any situation. She prefers to proceed one step at a time, and she doesn't like taking any risks; what goes around, comes around. Her self-control is top quality as well as her persistence. She handles money carefully, enjoys working and wants to make progress all the time. Despite this all she might still be a bit too careful when there should be a change, which is why she has lost many good opportunities.
A secret: Malin would never admit it, but although she claims that she's over drugs, she still flops down sometimes, especially when she's having relationship problems or stressing about work (sometimes she even thinks that she chose the wrong job; seeing sick or dying people is breaking her heart).
