So... that was a flood.

It all seemed so harmless at first, but it quickly went downhill, didn't it?

I've got a question for you, actually. [Eddie disappears off screen, and comes back with a little piece of card, then holds it up to the camera. The card is a square of orange, much like a paint sample swatch ( Read more... )

surprisingly competent, complimentary colours, painting by numbers, won a prize for mustard, not a chromotologist really, secretly a victorian

You can come, but I'm not hurt.

I'm sure.

Bring them if you really want.

I'd rather just make sure.

I'll see you in a bit.

[Eddie knocked on her door a matter of minutes later.]

[Jane opened it for him and stepped back. She pulled her hair up and away from her face.]

You didn't have to come, Red. I told you that I'm fine.

Wanted to talk to you anyway, actually.

[He stepped inside and set his travelling swatch down, glancing up at her,]

And I'd rather make sure.

[She sat down in a chair and nodded.] If it's about the...flood...I don't want to hear it.

You were an idiot.

I didn't know what to do, I was trying to talk the situation down, I didn't think...

[He shrugged weakly,]

I said I was sorry.

[She waved a hand in dismissal.] That's not what I meant. I don't care about what...happened, then. That was my fault. And it won't happen again.

I was talking about what you said to me.

[Eddie nodded slowly, and with a slight wince,]

Ah. Well... It was a flood. I didn't know whether to explain everything for the sake of a few days, or go with a lie that might make sense.

[She just offered him a quick smile, just to break the tension. She didn't want him to feel guilty for what happened, after all.]

Are you just taking my word that I'm fine, then?

No, I was actually carefully watching you to see if you seemed hurt. Or seeing if you wanted to tell me you weren't.

[He paused,] Why, what's wrong?

Just bruises. [She pointed at him.] I'm showing you this because you're my swatchman, not so that you can get any ideas. [Standing up, she turned and pulled her shirt up in the back slightly to reveal large bruising there from landing after being thrown. It was the most serious injury she had, and, while it wasn't terrible, it was uncomfortable.]

Would I, Jane? [Actually, yes, he would, but that wasn't the point.] There's a Rule about that. [It was half a joke, and he regretted it instantly, but still, he stepped behind her and lightly touched the bruising,]

How much does it hurt? One to ten. [He mainly wanted to make sure she hadn't broken a rib or anything, as then he'd have to send her to an actual doctor.]
