As soon as
Cameron was down for the count -- and Xander was reassured by the nurses that he was just sleeping -- he made his way out to the waiting room and
pulled out his phone.
He didn't want to step on the intensely personal kind of calls that he knew Cam would want to make for himself -- eventually, at least -- but he needed to let someone know. Preferably somebody who knew Cam better than Xander. He ran through the options in his head, and finally punched in the alumni code for a number in Colorado.
Sam, of course, happened to be under something mechanical and possibly explosive when the phone rang. "Damn it." She climbed out from under her newest brainstorm and picked up the phone. "Carter."
"Sam. Hey. It's Xander."
"Xander, hey!" She relaxed against the workbench. "What's new and exciting in--wait, I forgot where you are. Maybe new and exciting aren't desirable. How're things?"
"We're not being invaded, so there's that." Xander paused. "At least not since the last time I checked outside. But under not-so-new, Cam showed back up - and he's not doing so great."
Cameron? Wasn't he home or at the Academy? "What's wrong?"
"He got stuck in his timeline, like I did. Not as long, but from the shape he was in, things must've been pretty bad for him there."
Sam abruptly decided that now would be a good time for sitting. "How bad is he? Is he injured, dying, comatose, what?"
"Just kind of beat up and worn out, mostly, I think. He hadn't eaten anything in a couple days."
Days? Holy Hannah, this sounded bad. "Does he have anyone with him?"
"We're at the clinic right now -- I found him out by the causeway and brought him in." Xander rubbed at the back of his neck. "Aside from his dog, I'm not sure if he's got anybody besides us." He meant the capital-U Fandom Us; he sure as hell hoped Cam could count on more than just the two of them. "He was a little out of it, but when they asked if there was anybody who needs to know he's all right, he said there's nobody left."
Sam did some quick calculations in her head as she pulled up meterological maps and diagrams of the United States. "I'll be there as soon as I can. Hopefully sometime either tonight or tomorrow." A cloaked swoop-bike was still a wonderful thing, regardless of the situation, yes.
"I'll stick around to make sure he's okay." Xander shot a wry glance at the waiting room. "You never know, there might be new ceiling tiles to count since the last time I was here."
"Okay. So, try to keep him calm and possibly sedated, and I'll see you both soon." She wished she had the words to comfort Xander, but that wasn't even close to her strength.
"Take care," he answered before letting her go. "And thanks."
