Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
He holds her sometimes; tight against his body as she breathes through her dreams. She'll fall asleep in his bed after angry fucking and he'll make a mental note to do the laundry before Karen comes over. What they're doing is still killing him but he can't seem to let her go. He can't make himself make a decision to end this fucked up little game their playing.
He looks down one road and he sees a miserable life watching Pam walk around with that tacky ring on her finger. He sees her loosing so much more of herself and secretly meeting him in closets and destroying them both completely in the process. He knows he would take that reality over a life where he never got to touch her but God, what kind of life would that be.
Down another road he sees himself making her choose. He sees a life without lying to Karen and a life where maybe Pam leaves Roy and Jim gets to wake up with her every morning instead of just stealing moments here and there. He thinks she'd hate him a little bit but maybe she'd love him more and let him sink into her when he needed to feel safe and loved.
There's a third road where life went on without Pam but he can't even conceive of living that life. So he doesn't think about it.
Jim doesn't know what he's going to do about his life but he does know it doesn't matter as long as it's got Pam in it.
