At Harbor, Ryan had only ever dated Marissa, and any other girl he would have been interested would have gone past Summer readily. Probably they would have grown up together, and even if that weren't the case, it was a small school. Chance meetings were easily arranged.
It was a small island, too, but people knew each other in passing, if that, in the briefest of acquaintances. This whole sitting down together, set up in advance, left him unaccountably awkward, even with the certainty that Summer and Lucy could both hold their own. Summer was all he had left of home, and Lucy made up a major part of his life on the island. Seeing both together at once was unsettling somehow.
Summer had suggested lunch, and he'd gone with that as the simplest way to handle it, saving them a table in the kitchen in the midst of the usual lunch crowd. It wasn't their booth on the pier, but there was still something comfortably familiar about it.
