Somewhere in the preserve - Morning

Oct 02, 2011 16:52

Jake hadn't moved since last night. The only change since last evening was that at some point, he'd pulled on his boxer briefs, but he still sat with his back against a tree, his clothes in a pile beside him. He'd heard Sam moving between the trees, restless and waiting for him, but he'd ignored it and finally Sam had left. Jake hoped he'd gone ( Read more... )

It would have been easier for Caroline to find Jake if he had been making a lot of noise, but no, he was silent and she was a terrible tracker.

But she wasn't stupid. Caroline pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed Jake, closing her eyes to listen for the obnoxious ringtone she'd set for herself and trying not to think of the last time she'd used this strategy to find something she'd lost.

Jake startled as his telephone rang and for a moment he was reaching for the pile of clothes, knowing it was Caroline. It wouldn't help to pick up, though. It was like he could say anything and he knew he wouldn't be able to listen to her panic without being able to comfort her.

"Fuck," he growled and drew up his knees, resting his forehead against them as he wished for the phone to stop ringing.

The second she heard the phone, Caroline was running at inhuman speeds before he could even try to shut it off and ruin her ability to find him.

And then there he was, half naked in the cold morning, curled up on himself as she came to a stop in front of him. Sam hadn't lied, he looked like hell. "Jake..." She couldn't help that just his name had her choked up.

He'd heard her approach, but he couldn't let himself believe it was really her, despite what his senses were telling him.

His head shot up at the sound of her voice and his mouth opened to answer, but no words wanted to pass his lips and his hands gripped at his shins in frustration.

The look on his face was going to destroy her, but Caroline worked to get herself together enough that she could go and sit by him, leaning her side against his legs a little to see if she couldn't comfort him for once. "It's okay, Sam told me what he did," she told him. "You'd be proud, I didn't provoke him to change like I wanted."

He shuddered at the touch, but he wasn't jumping up like he'd expected to and he tried to remember Sam's order. Maybe as long as he wasn't the one initiating it, he tried to reach up and touch her cheek, but his arm wouldn't move and he supposed that confirmed his limits there. He supposed he should be grateful by how literal these orders were.

Which left him with little else to respond than giving her a worried frown because she shouldn't be provoking Sam and risking herself like that.

Caroline couldn't help frowning at how distant and unfriendly Jake seemed when he couldn't talk to her or return her touch. At least she knew his face well enough to figure out some things. "No worrying," she whispered, picking up his hand and wrapping both of hers around it, thinking that clinging to him might stop her from freaking out. "We'll be fine. I wanna ask you questions, but it's like with the puppy and I know there's no way to get an answer."

He lowered his head, staring at how she was holding on to his hand, her pale fingers wrapped around his. He wished he could move and curl his fingers around hers, hold on to her as much as he felt her holding on to him.

That quiet numbness that had kept him in one spot for hours was gone now, leaving behind nothing but frustration that made him want to scream. His breath quickened as he struggled to keep his temper, every muscle in his body tense and on edge as if he'd been saving up his unease for the past few hours and now he could explode at any moment.

His frustration was beyond obvious and she let go of his hand to slide more into his space, getting on her knees to pet her hands through his hair. "Hey, calm down. I know, okay?" It might not help him to see her cry, but she wasn't about to let him freak out and flee. Her fingers settled over his ears, petting as calmly as she could manage as she peppered his face with slightly damp kisses. "You love me. If you didn't, he wouldn't have done this to you. I'm so so sorry, sweetie."

His hands fisted in the air on either side of her, unable to actually wrap his arms around her like he wanted to. But he felt her lips on his skin and her tears as well.

And despite everything, the feeling of her fingers behind his ears had his breath easing at least a little.

"We'll figure something out," she promised, leaning her forehead against his and letting out a sigh along with her sad and quiet words. "You're not running from me or flinching away from my hands so I'm totally counting that as a win, okay? I love you and I'm not going anywhere." No matter how painful it was to feel like he was ignoring her when she was practically in his lap.

He didn't know what there was to figure out. He hadn't expected being able to let her touch him either and as much as it eased something, he wasn't sure how long she'd put up with the one sided thing.

He sighed and as much as he wanted to close his eyes and take advantage of the closeness, he forced himself to meet his eyes and hoped that at least she understood that he still loved her. Sam couldn't take that away.

It wasn't as if he was offering up ideas or telling her what she was supposed to do now, so Caroline was just going to lean in and meet his eyes and try really, really hard not to cry in her grief. No, he wasn't gone, but he might as well have been.

He couldn't even more forward and bump his nose against hers to try and lighten at least some of the mood and he made a frustrated noise as he kick his heel at the ground.

This wasn't fair. Sam had no right. None at all. This was his life and so many choices had been taken from him already and now he couldn't even comfort her.

She couldn't bear feeling how tense he was, one hand dropping to rub his shoulder as he growled and kicked and looked outright miserable. "Oh God, I'm making it worse for you, aren't I?"

Like he could answer.

He didn't know. He liked neither option, to be honest. At least she knew it wasn't him and so far she hadn't blamed him for messing up and being unable to stop Sam. He should have just run with her.

Not that he could tell her. Not that he could lean forward and rest his head against her shoulder so she'd know that no matter what the mess, he did kind of want her there.

Was motioning talking? He tried, crooking his finger at her to move closer.
