Foot-in-Mouth Disease

Last night during choir practice, I was talking to one of the choir ladies I sit next to during practice and asked how she was doing. She is about my Mom’s age and tells me that she has been having joint pain in her knees and ankles. I say something about how that’s too bad and ask if she thinks it has something to do with the weather changes. She tells me she thinks it's because she has bad running shoes. I realize at about this point that I’ve just implied that she has arthritis and quickly try to backtrack by saying that Michael gets pains in his knee when the weather changes. I was trying to imply that having joint pain doesn’t mean you're elderly, but I think I merely underscored the arthritis idea because she exclaimed at about that point, "I’m probably just old!"

Um... you can call me fat now if you want.

This ranks right up there with the time two years ago when, at a DAR lunch, I asked a little old lady if her husband fought during World War I. She swept me an icy stare that did not melt even as I quickly clarified that I meant World War Two.

that's me
