Most of the secrets Mia’s had to keep in her life have been dirty ones.  She learned to wear long sleeves in the summer and pretend to be sick on days when she had Phys.Ed at school.  She learned lots of ways to explain away bruises and marks and awkward movements.  She learned how to bleach blood out of her clothes and mop it up off the floor.  She learned that cold water gets out old stains better than warm water, and that if she soaks her Barbie pink underpants in the sink for a few hours they’re as good as new.

No evidence.  Don’t tell.

When Rick came along, Mia learned how to keep her mouth shut and her eyes closed.  She learned how to fit a bleached blonde wig on her head and paint her lips bright red, and say the right things at the right time.  She could catch a guy’s attention.  She could make him pay for the experience.  She could let him inside and he’d never even know there was another girl in there.  The secret Mia.  The one who wasn’t fake moaning and tilting her hips.  She hid that girl away as much as she could, though sometimes she couldn’t manage it.  Drugs helped.  She kept a small stash of pills under her mattress for emergencies.  There were some things Mia just couldn’t do while remaining sober and not hate herself for afterwards.  A bunch of sickos.  That’s what guys were.

The fight clubs were something Mia had tried to keep quiet.  The extra money, the nest egg she was putting aside for her freedom.  The release of tossing her fist into some guy’s stomach, letting out her anger, sweating and gasping, and this time it wasn’t in some gross business man’s bed.  She loved how she could make someone else bleed for a change.  The rage surprised her sometimes, made her feel out of control instead of strong, like she wanted to feel.  And then word got around about her illicit activities in the underground and her secret was found out.

She kind of knew it wouldn’t last.

And then he came along.  Someone with a secret bigger than anything Mia had ever had and a lot more dangerous too.  But this secret was different.  It didn’t make her feel shameful or dirty.  It didn’t feel horrible to keep it.  She’d met an honest to God do-gooder type of hero.  Like from the storybooks she’d read as a kid, only this one was real and making headlines in the Daily Planet newspapers.

Mia had meant what she said.  She wasn’t going to run off and tell all her friends that she used to train with the Emerald Archer.  That she still trains with him.  That maybe, someday, she’ll get to do something with her life that’s just as important, just as worthwhile.

Mia’s got a secret and it isn’t dirty at all.

Heroes exist.
