the ballad of Sweeney Todd

So I attended the tale. It was really good, just so well put together and the actors were incredibly talented. I was surprised at how well I was able to follow the storyline considering it's more of an opera than a musical, and Sondheim writes these really twisty, complicated verses.
Actually, a lot of actors from the original revival cast were there, and I didn't get any understudies. (No, Patti Lupone and Michael Cerveris were not there.) But Judy Kaye was a great Mrs. Lovett and the actor playing Tobias could really act.
Lighting was great and the sparse sets really worked and made sure not to detract from the story. It was pretty much a stream of consciousness with no blackouts and all the cast members were always on stage. I loved seeing the instruments all shiny and ready. John Doyle's staging was simply brilliant.
My favourite song was The Ballad of Sweeney Todd which was nice and creepy. I love how at the beginning, Pirelli just comes and takes off the gag and straitjacket from Tobias and shoves a violin into his hands and then they begin.
Before the show started there were two women behind me talking about Wicked and Grey Gardens and I just wanted to join them. I was sitting dead centre, by the way, in the ninth row. I had a great view.
The next show I'm seeing will be Dirty Dancing in February, and it will suck, and then Rent (!!!!) in March, which will be sad and amazing and orgasmic, eyegasmic and eargasmic.
