I've sat on this review for 2 days. Because I really didn't want to have to say what I'm about to say, but it has to be said, no matter what. Spider-man 3 was a major disappointment in my life. Not even 10 minutes into the movie and I was already questioning it in my mind. I didn't like most of the movie and I will explain why.
First of all.. I didn't realize that they changed the name of the movie to "Peter Parker's Musical" All this time I thought it was still part 3 of a trilogy..
How many villains can 1 movie have before it becomes a problem that affects the whole movie... The truth is.. you can have 100 villains in a movie if you give them the time they deserve. And for that matter.. give the correct origin stories for villains.. don't just let things fall from the sky without explanations.. and while i'm on the topic of explanations.. um.. explain things.. I mean.. ok.. i know everything i should know for a movie like spidey 3 cause i'm a dork, geek, nerd.. however you want to serve me.. but others don't and need explanations.
Ok so.. Sandman: Great Casting. Thomas Hayden Church is by far the best Flint Marko that anyone coulda asked for. He fits the character greatly. However, Marko isn't much of a bad guy or a villain. He does the things he does because he cares too much for his sickly daughter. That's fantastic, but seriously.. that's not Sandman. Oh.. and he cries... ::sigh::
Eddie Brock: Topher Grace was an ok choice. I gave them the benifit of the doubt when they first hired him for the position. I thought it would work and it did. However, Brock is not that small. He had muscle and definition whereas Topher doesn't have the actual build to be Brock, but that aside he does a great job. They made him a little less Brock-ish as well and I think there shoulda been more to make him angry. I mean embarassment sure.. but not just 1 time....
Harry Osborn: First off, I just have to say this.. Harry is one of my favorite characters.. which should be the case anyway because he's been around since the 3rd movie. I like Harry good or bad, but when he finally becomes Goblin material, omg, he becomes soo much better. However, too early did he lose his fight against Peter. Harry becomes a loser for the rest of the movie. After his loss to peter they let me down with Harry's character. I can understand what happens, but they took it too far... and it probably doesn't help that ed sat next to me and said things constantly to make it worse. In the End.. I fell in love again with Harry's character. It's very redeeming and that makes me happy.
Mary Jane: I like MJ. I would date and marry her if I could. But she seriously has some jealousy and depression problems. I mean ok, so she doesn't have the easiest time in this movie, but she still is way too jealous that Peter has more fame as a costumed 'freak' than she does in her plays. She gets too whiny and secretive towards peter.. i'm surprised he didn't just take her back to the bridge and toss her off himself.
Aunt May: Dear God LEAVE YOUR HAIR UP!!! Freaked me out!! haha. Rosemary Harris is a great wise woman and I love her as aunt may, but she has to leave her hair up for now on or i don't think i'll be able to sleep at night. No real good message from her in this movie. Just "But your husband before your father" as ed said she said... lol.. She did say something along the lines of "IF you can put your wife before yourself then you know its time" or something like that. But there was no "You do too much, ur not superman u know" or "Sometimes you have to give up the things you want the most"
Peter Parker: I want to see less about Peter and more about Spider-man. This movie isn't about Peter, it's called Spider-man for a reason!! So show less of peter damnit!! Way too emotional for me. They story is too focused on Him and MJ than on Spidey and his villains. Dark Peter.. ridiculous... Music scene for 30-45 seconds in Spider-man 2, classic and funny... 5 minutes in Spidey 3.. insanely too much.. Peter becomes an ass.. which is cool.. but at the same time.. there is too much of that.
Spider-man: Where was he in this movie.. how many mistakes could he make.. is it possible for him to still be alive after the beatings he took? And since when did he forget to finish the job... and when did he start retreating... Symbiote Spidey.. Umm... since when could he take the suit off and shove it in a box? That's not supposed to happen... I want more show of strength... hell more spidey period is really all i'd like to ask for....
Venom: Which.. no one ever utters the name so how are those that don't know the characters suppose to know what his name is.... He looks absolutely amazing. They used his symbol, and his eyes and face and everything.. amazing. However.. the suit is grasping a bit much.. i mean it's cool cause that's what it does.. but idk if i enjoy it that way. Other than that.. there was 2 seconds of venom.. so that was disappointing
J.Jonah Jameson: Good stuff for him.. but when did he become so sick and need all that medicine?? I just don't know...
Robbie: Way too little of robbie.
Betty: love her still.
Gwen Stacy: Good addition to the cast, but she didn't have any point. well.. she had some point.. but it just didn't really come across like it was meant to.
Which brings me out of the characters.. The story and writing in this movie was shit. Spider-man was better. And we all know that Spidey 2 was GOD compared to both movies. When a movie like Spiderman 2 can kill off a character that was onscreen for maybe 5 minutes and make you feel the loss and the pain.. that's good writing. But when you have a movie like Spidey 3.. u get holes everywhere, craters everywhere and it becomes like a chunk of swiss cheese all full of holes.. How is that going to be a good movie? It isn't, and that's where the problem lies.
Another problem I had was the use of the camera. Too many stupid effects that weren't needed.. not to mention the Blair Witch treatment when the cops are chasing sandman.. I've never felt sick in a movie theater before.. like seriously. Stop running with the camera!! The movie was just made way too cheesily. 258 million dollars and all you can come up with is a chessy movie.. that's not a good thing... It's just disappointing and I know that a LOT of fans were disappointed.. And it's a major difference from the first 2.. and it's bad that you can tell that only 2 minutes into the movie.
but that's my Spidey 3 Review.. It has its perks.. some good moments.. but no great moments (except maybe the full reveal of venom) and some horrendous moments that should have never happened. I wish I could give the movie an 'A' but I cannot.. and even a 'B' seems hard... i can only go as high as a 'B-' but i'd probably say that the movie makes a 'C+' in my grading scale. Still a must see for any Spidey fans.. and even if your not.. just don't expect to learn how sand flies and can direct itself anywhere it wants to go..
PS- the best best best moment was when they revealed that Flint Marko was Ben's killer.. cause the girl next to me was like ::GAAAAASSSSSSSSPPPPPP:: LOL she had no clue!! hahahahahahahaha good times.... alright.. that's a wrap.
