North to Alaska

The road to Alaska was a long one Cacama thought as he shuffled through his thoughts. Mira was busy playing with the new puppy, Sid, and Karl and Meg were arguing in the front seats about something. Cacama watched the scenery go by on the road and tried to recall all the people he’d met through his father’s work. Aesop Research dealt with Endron Oil, that much he remembered as well as Magadon Inc. Young and Smith was another, whose plants were to the east but he couldn’t think of any Asian companies.

He then thought harder, vaguely recalling an oriental man he had met who came over to his father’s house one day. His name was a word in English, and his second name was Yama something. Yamakuza. Yamamota. Yama ... he couldn’t recall it now. But he would know it if he saw it again.

Beneath him slept the healing ones. Selene whom he had never seen awake, Fangs and Mary, both having barely survived their ordeal, and Trent who seemed far more of an enigma than Mira treated him. The things he did seemed strange, almost suicidal, but he seemed to know exactly what he was doing. Cacama wished he knew what he was doing.

The signs continued to pass by on the road. He saw the customs post up ahead and watched as Mira hid the puppy so no one would ask questions about transporting animals. He then frowned as he saw someone from inside the custom’s station look the van over carefully and then pick up a phone. He started to say something but it was too late. The custom’s official gestured for Karl to pull to the side and ordered everyone out of the van so the customs people could search it.
