Star Talk
for Jonah
The clouds are moving in tonight, as they were
that night on your driveway. I was cold, we
were sitting on the ground, and that other girl,
who I never liked, was whining that she couldn’t
quite see Orion, could you please help her? And
you explained that, um, she wasn’t looking for Orion,
she was looking for the nebula, which is the very tip
of Orion’s
club.
She couldn’t find it. I could.
We were both looking
for the right girl (she wasn’t for you), and for
what lay inside the nebula: a star, and what
around it: the gasses, green and orange
in Hubble’s infrared pictures. We knew too much.
The clouds are moving in tonight, and now they’re
here, and you’re there, and we can talk all we want.
