I moved this weekend into the new condo, or at least mostly. I'm now having adventures in homeownership. Luckily good plumbers and handymen are in ready supply these days due to the rescession.
The first night of homeownership I just went home and packed some and zoned out and slept. Which was good. Then Friday night I set up a tent in my new place, went to the wine bar and hung out, then made it back to the new place with Megan and stayed up most of the night, then slept a couple hours on a hardwood floor. Very fun times, but a couple hours of sleep did not cut it when I had to wake again at 7 am to meet the plumber who I thought was going to just check things out and fiddle with some stuff.
Oh, I should have known better. Ends up the people who re-did the floors for the bank that owned the place before me were not, shall we say, considerate. In fact, they poured essentially gravel into the garbage disposal and poured wet grout in the wet-bar sink. Yes, you heard me right. Grout. This resulted in there essentially being concrete in the trap of the sink. It's a wonder it drained at all. We replaced the trap and there's still a clog, so I got someone else to come in (Monday) to take a look who has better equipment than my first guy. Lo and behold, the second guy couldn't clear it either. The first guy will also be in on Wednesday again to help out with my stove, washer-dryer, etc.
That was Saturday.
Then came Sunday. I paid movers this time, in addition to getting Megan, Eleanor, and Cyndi & David to lend a hand. The movers showed up a bit late, but it ended up not being too big a deal. We started around 10:30 and actually finished around 3:00 after the Sears guys showed up with my appliances.
Speaking of appliances, I almost killed a Sears employee Friday night. After I had come in on Tuesday to make sure they were going to have the appliances I wanted I came back after work Friday (the employee I had talked to before wasn't going to be there Thursday, so I acquiessed to coming Friday--mistake). Ends up the fridge I wanted wasn't going to be able to be delivered until the this coming Friday. By the time we looked to see if there were any other fridges that would work, the frist wasn't going to be able to be there until Sunday the 7th. That was a no-go for sure. I was hungry, it was two hours later, and I was getting frustrated. So I calmly told him that my blood sugar was low and that this wasn't going to work, so he had two options: sell me two fridges so that one could be delivered immediately and be returned, or take all the other purcahses back and I'd go somewhere else. I ended up getting a fridge, which I will arrange an exchange on later.
I do however have to rip out some cabinets to get my washer-dryer to fit. Ugh.
But, other than that, homeownership is going okay. I really want to get around to, I don't know, having a kitchen and setting up the rest of my furniture and unpacking my books. Mmmm unpacking books.
