OOH! Since I'm one of those who DO think that Tom is the HBP, let me explain this to you, and I'm gonna quote from CoS:
"I've just got one question, Dobby," said Harry as Dobby pulled on Harry's sock with shaking hands. "You told me all this had nothing to do with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, remember? Well -- " "It was a clue, sir," said Dobby, his eyes widening, as though this was obvious. "Was giving you a clue. The Dark Lord, before he changed his name, could be freely named, you see?"Pg. 339 (U.S. edition) - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This and the fact that CoS WAS supposed to be initially titled HBP, the question is WHY? She did say that the plot of CoS strayed so much that it didn't fit the title of HBP anymore, but reading CoS you can see that there is no explicit person who holds the title 'Half Blood Prince' now is there? That the story became more about the Chamber than any Prince, right? Plus, we still know jackshit about Tom's mother, and Jo already said we're going to find out more about his parentage in HBP, and his mother is obviously a pureblood since Tom is a half-blood, but now when you think back to the Black family tree and what Sirius said all of them being inter-related, where does Tom's mother fit into all of this? This woman, Tom's mother, holds the blood of Slytherin in her and gave it down to her son, the Heir of Slytherin (nice title, no?), and obviously since Jo said that Voldy never had kids, he is the last, but whatever family is mother is from you realize that Tom's mother is the last person of this family before Tom, but WHAT family?
