Explain for us, how life was before he became a bug. Define what you think was important to know about him and his background. Gregor was a great guy! And it's really ashamed what happened to him. He was a great young man, who had a lot of potential. He was interested in making a name for himself as a painter and had kept some of his greatest in his room. He treasured painting as much as our relationship. That was always what he loved to do best and I think he felt it was the only place he felt that he could truly express himself. Unfortunately, his father got himself into debt when his failing business venture went bankrupt and as he tried anything to save it, ran himself into debt. If he hadn’t been such a lazy bumpkin and would have gotten another job, then Gregor would probably still be here, today. Instead he had Gregor take over as head of the family, so that Gregor could work off that debt and his father could retire early, using the excuse that he was too disappointed to go on and for fear of a second failure. This created an impediment towards Gregor’s future, but I never thought it would have been the death of him ! ! ! [sob] Gregor was going to go to a Conservatory of the Arts and later, as he attained more money at a part time job was going help his sister too, paying her educational fee at the Conservatory where she would be able to propel her talent on the Violin. But, since Mr. Samsa left the funding of the family to Gregor he ended up working a thankless job, which got him no where, gave him nothing to look forward to, and had made him edgy towards his strict company. He traveled day in, and day out, pushing business contracts left and right, and went from hotel to hotel; never making strong connections with any of the people he met and never finding any time for his paintings. This left him craving the two forms of expression that were both very important to him. He started writing me recently, but what I told him about in my life just opened his eyes to the fact that his life was really empty and unfulfilled. He had been fine for five years, but, as he was telling me in a recent letter, that he realized that his family did not appreciate him and lost faith in a time when he would be finished helping his family and would have time to paint again. Wow. That’s fascinating. We will have to try and take a look at his work and see what he’s done. So, after the transformation happened, how did his family react? Well that was just the problem and it proved true his idea that the family didn’t care. In the very first instance that his father saw Gregor in the form of a bug he first, chased him around the room beating him with a stick, and then, secondly, she jammed him back into his room with such force, that he seriously damaged Gregor’s back. Over the next couple months he was looked after by Grete, his sister, but all he served her as, as she said “was a real pain in the ass.” Even though they disliked obviously disliked him, at least she was helping. Helping might have been a little of an over statement. All she did was put old leftovers of theirs in his room and cleaned the room itself. She never noticed him, or not enough to see his excruciating pain at least. She never noticed that his back was gashed up and covered in stale blood. If she cared she would have noticed how he sat up by the window of his room all day long, longing to get out; longing to go to the hospital across the street. If only she cared, she could have gotten him away, set him free, let the hospital help or do something. It got worse as time went on. Grete stopped caring about Gregor a lot more, as they all got jobs, even the father, even though he claimed to be too old and tired and humiliated to work, when trying to get Gregor to bail him out. The only sign of help she would give from then on was to throw some food quickly into his room not caring whether he ate it or not. The next terrible act his father instilled upon him was throwing apples at him vigorously while he ran around trying to dodge them. One got lodged into his side and stayed there for months after. This caused him serious pain, but again, they did nothing. it rot on his back and he was reduced to moving only a little at a time. Another sign, which helped Gregor understand that they were terrible people, who did not care about him, was when they took everything except his couch out of his room. They even tried to take his precious paintings away from him, but he just wouldn’t have that, he defended that, being the last thing in his life that made it worth living. After they took his stuff out, they then put all sorts of unused items from around the house, into his room. The final straw that his mind just couldn’t take, was when he found out that his sister felt that their family would be a lot better off, if he realized his place and just went away. All throughout the time he was a bug he had felt a deep hunger. He wasn’t eating much at all, but that wasn’t it. His hunger was for people. For their love. For his family’s love. And hearing this really put it out there, and made him realize that love was gone, might have never been there. That hunger overwhelmed him that night, when he heard his sisters speech and he died in his sleep. The saddest thing is that he was so loving towards his family, and especially towards his sister. To his sister so much so that he was going to buy her admission to a great conservatory where she would be very happy and learn so much more than she could on her own, yet she was the one who called out all of the families thoughts, and told him in effect to go and die!!! It’s insane!
Wow that is REALLY messed up! Your exactly right!! Well, this is fascinating. I’m glad we were able to find you. So, as a last question, what, do you think, was the reason he became bug? I mean surely there was significance. Well I’m glad you came to that. I sit up late at night, and think some times. I think about why God might have done this. What the meaning could have been. And without looking at other cases, I think I understand. He did this as a test! A test to the Samsa family! He’s saying that they are such a bad family that they’ve turned their son into an bug! If they are passionate enough to take care of him and watch after him, as the member of their family that he was, then maybe God would remove him from his bug like form and return him to his natural state. Unfortunately the family failed at this, and so he died. Sadly as God made life without equity, the family itself is off living a better life because of his death. Once he was dead they started to feel uplifted and free, they were able to move into a smaller house, they were all working and so had stuff to talk about and they didn’t have to think about him bothering them. What will happen though is that they will go to hell. If god has done this, he made his test to them, they failed and they will pay for it in their after life. Wow, that’s a good thought. Yeah, we’ll look into that idea. I myself don’t believe in God, but that just might convert a lot of people to believers. Hmm! Well Franz, thanks for all you’ve told us. His story was tragic and I’m truly sorry that you couldn’t save him and that this happened.
