History

Nigeria was imperialized in the 1800's by Britain becuase they had a large amount of palm trees that could be turned into palm-oil. When Britain imperialized the region they disrupted the social aspect of the area becuase it was made up of over 250 different tribes that opperated on their own with ties to their own ethnic groups. Britain stopped economic gain for Nigerian tribes becuase they forced them to work on plantations that produced British goods. In turn the profit from these products when to Britain and Nigeria was left with nothing. When Britain forced them to work, they grouped different tribes together and this sparked conflicts.

Strength's and Weaknesses and How Imperialism Effected This

The conflicts Britain made by uniting opposing tribes still effect the country today. For instance they educated the southern region of the country, but not the northern region. Now the northern region struggles to gain political power while the south dominates it. This is bad because the northern tribes hated the southern tribes and created coups for half a decade. These coups have restricted the overall success of the nation becuase each time one happened the leader in power was setting up beneficial government systems.

Because Britain changed the focus of farmers in Nigeria from agriculture to plantations of palm-oil, cocoa, cotton, peanuts, and tin Nigeria is having a real hard time getting enough food for their people. They have to import most of their food from other countries when they used to be able to export it for money.

They haven't set up agricultural farms or fully utilized markets of industry with huge potential, like the oil industry, that they could because of the slow political progression. Right now over 60% of the nation is living under the poverty line and only 40% of the nations people even hold a job. Since the country relies heavily upon imported food, and 60% of its people are living without a job, they really need to start producing agriculture on farms.
