The basement is dead quiet and completely dark when Tao emerges from the bunker. He looks back down at Joonmyun and Sehun with a small smile before re-shutting the bunker door sealing them inside. He stands a mere inch away from the door not wanting to move. He doesn’t know what is in store for him outside the house let alone outside the small dank basement. He thinks for a brief moment that this wasn’t the best idea.
After a few moments of further deliberation Tao finally makes a move. He moves toward the basement stairs without looking back. Maybe they already got everything back to normal and it’s safe out there anyway. Tao shakes his head of the hopeful thought. It wasn’t something that could be so easily solved, no matter how much he wants to believe it.
He takes his time making his way up the basement stairs. The door at the top of the stairs is sealed shut securely which Tao takes as a good sign. He quickens his pace a little before stopping at the top of the stairs right outside the door. He slowly moves forward turning his head and resting his ear against the door.
He waits, listening carefully.
After a few minutes and not hearing anything at all he thinks it might actually be safe to go into the house but Tao knows that once he is in the house he has to act fast. He can’t risk any of the infected seeing him, he doesn’t want to draw them anywhere near Sehun and Joonmyun.
With his hand on the knob he takes a deep breath. Slowly he twists the knob until the door clicks softly. Then he opens the door as slow as he possibly can. Tao can feel the sweat dripping down the back of his neck. He doesn’t know what is waiting for him on the other side of the door and he isn’t so sure about his plan anymore. Maybe he should’ve just stayed in the bunker. At least it was safe down there.
He lets the door open enough for him to be able to see outside. He peeks out but to his extreme relief there isn’t anything in his line of sight. He lets the door open a little more. Nothing still. He lets the door open all the way making sure it stays quiet. The door makes a slight scraping sound along the floor. Tao cringes and waits. Nothing happens.
Once he is sure there is nothing inside the house with him he takes a step into the house.
Movement catches his eye. He freezes and tenses up. Tao stops breathing. A shadow moves along the floor coming towards him but from his angle he can’t see what or who is coming towards him.

Luhan stays quiet after the bunker door closes behind Chanyeol. He wouldn’t know what to say to Baekhyun even if he had words for him. The situation is one that is best solved with silence, at least for now. Luhan can hear Baekhyun trying in vain to keep his tears in but in the end they come and they come hard. He sobs into the corner wrapped in a ball. His back is turned away from Luhan and shaking horribly.
The sound of Baekhyun's sobs drive Luhan up the wall but he isn’t going to be a selfish jerk and tell him to stop. Baekhyun needs to let it all out. It will make him feel better if he does.
It doesn’t take long for him to stop and Luhan is thankful for that.
Luhan is about to say something to reassure Baekhyun that things are going to be okay when a sudden loud bang sounds above their heads somewhere. Luhan can see Baekhyun visibly tense up and Luhan knows that he did the same. Another bang sounds this time Luhan is sure it’s coming from the basement right above their heads.
“Luh-“
“Don’t.” Luhan says softly. Baekhyun swallows hard and nods once understanding. They need to stay quiet to insure that whatever is above them doesn’t find out that they are there. The bunkers are sturdy but they are not guaranteed to keep the infected out. Survival depends on how you react and Luhan knows they have only one option. Stay quiet.

A large figure comes around the corner fast. A body slams into Tao sending him flying into the half open door behind him. The door slams shut loudly echoing throughout the house.
“Oh shit Tao.” Kris’s face is filled with a fierceness that Tao hasn’t seen in a long time. “Don’t do that.”
“Don’t do that? I didn’t do anything.” Tao sneers shoving Kris away from him. “I thought you were one of the infected.” Tao lowers his voice.
“I thought you were one of them too!” Kris looks over his shoulder quickly then back at Tao. “Why aren’t you inside the bunker?”
Tao crosses his arms over his chest. “I was checking to see if it was safe yet!”
A light scratching sound suddenly can be heard from somewhere within the house. Tao isn’t too sure but he thinks it’s coming from the kitchen. He looks to Kris who’s eyes are widened and his body still as a statue. Kris looks at Tao and places his finger against his lips telling Tao to be quiet.
Tao obviously isn’t going to make any noise in this situation. Instead he keeps his eyes focused on Kris.
Kris, as Tao notices, is slowly pulling out a machete. Kris does it so quietly that not even the sound of the metal sliding against the sheath can be heard. Kris doesn’t look at Tao as he slowly moves forward toward the source of the sound.
Tao holds his breath as he watches Kris walk quietly along the wood floor. When Kris is out of sight, in the kitchen, Tao tenses up even more. He hears a thud and then Kris reappears before him.
“It’s dead. Don’t worry there was only one of them.” Kris turns and glares in the direction of the kitchen.
“How bad is it?” Tao whispers.
Kris looks grim. “We lost the village.”
The words don’t seem to hit Tao. He stands there staring at Kris wide eyed but silent. He wants to ask what “lost the village” means but he can’t find his voice.
“There were just too many.” Kris looks as if he aged ten years. His eyes are bloodshot and his lips are chapped and bleeding. He has traces of blood on his cheeks and neck, and a lot of it on his shirt.
“What do we do now?” Tao manages to squeak out.
Kris turns around stares at the wall. “I don’t know.” He sounds so hopeless.
“What’s protocol for this kind of situation?”
“There isn’t one. We never thought this would--” A loud thump interrupts him. Without missing a beat Kris is turned back around and grabbing Tao roughly by the upper arm. “Get in the bunker and wait for me there,” he hisses in Tao’s ear.
Tao nods and does as he’s told. He rips the basement door open and flees the first floor of the house.

The loud bangs do not decrease when they stay quiet. Actually they seem to become more persistent. Luhan squeezes his eyes shut. Every time a loud bang sounds he flinches, his whole body tenses even more. His breathing has slowed but his heart is racing within his chest. There is no way it can be one of the infected, they wouldn’t make that much noise and they wouldn’t know that anyone was down here.
“Luhan.” Baekhyun whispers.
Luhan turns to stare at Baekhyun. “What?” He mouths to him.
Baekhyun seemingly changing his mind shakes his head.
A loud thump comes from the bunker door. Luhan jumps to his feet and moves against the far wall. He isn’t good a fighting, if one of the infected figure out how to get inside him and Baekhyun are done.
Luhan moves next to Baekhyun. The two of them stand there tensely, waiting for something to happen.
A few minutes pass but nothing more happens.
Finally, Luhan calms down. “I think whatever was up there is gone.”
Luhan’s words seem to calm Baekhyun down. He lets out a shaky breath and collapses to the floor in a heap. “I can’t do this,” he whispers. “I need Chanyeol here. I made a huge mistake. What if something happened to him?”
Luhan says nothing in reply. He doesn’t even know what to say at this point. He can’t reassure Baekhyun because he doesn’t know what is going on outside, he doesn’t know where Chanyeol is or if he is even alive right now.
“It’s hopeless isn’t it Luhan?” Baekhyun asks softly. “I mean if the breach was bad there could be no getting the village back under control. What are we supposed to do if that happens?”
Luhan shakes his head. He really doesn’t know for sure but it seems hopeless to him too.

Tao re-enters the bunker with shaky limbs. Joonmyun and Sehun stare at him but he silences them with just one look. The two of them still stare at Tao as if he has become one of the infected in his few minutes away from the two of them. It makes him slightly uncomfortable but he doesn’t his best to ignore them.
A few minutes late and Joonmyun can’t contain his questions any longer.
“How is it?” Joonmyun asks. “Is it bad?”
Tao shakes his head. “I don’t know.” he lies.
“What the fuck do you mean? How can you not know?” Sehun spits.
Tao glares at Sehun. “I didn’t make it out of the house.” Tao quickly explains what happened leaving out the part about the village being lost.
“So Kris should be joining us soon?” Joonmyun asks.
“Is he going to tell us anything? Or is he going to keep us in the dark?” Sehun asks, voice full of scorn.
Tao once again shakes his head. “He didn’t say.”
They are plunged into a tense silence then. All three of them thinking different things.
Tao sits down against the wall. He can’t seem to keep himself still for more than three seconds. Joonmyun and Sehun stay quiet. Even from the other side of the room Tao can feel the waves of irritation rolling of Sehun.
Footsteps suddenly echo above their heads and Tao jumps to his feet with only one thing on his mind. Kris.
Tao keeps his eyes on the bunker door. It slowly begins to open and Tao feels his anticipation rising. “Kris…”
The person now in the bunker is not Kris.

It’s only been a few hours since the scare but Luhan and Baekhyun are growing tired of waiting. Luhan managed to sleep for twenty minutes but when he woke up Baekhyun was crying again. There wasn’t anything he could do to make him feel better so he just sat there quietly.
Luhan was trying to think of a plan. They couldn’t stay down here forever. Luhan was already starting to feel the effects of barely eating and being stuck underground for so long. He really needed to get out soon. He’s not sure how much time has passed, a day maybe? But there food was almost gone already. They couldn’t stay down here for another day.
After a while Baekhyun stopped crying. Luhan knew it was wrong of him to be thankful for the silence but he was. Now he could think a little better.
“Luhan,” Baekhyun said cutting through Luhan’s thoughts. “We need to get out of here. I don’t think that Chan--” Baekhyun breaks off before he can finish his grim sentence.
“I’ve been trying to come up with a plan.” Luhan replies ignoring any mention of Chanyeol. “We can’t stay here but we can’t just leave. We don’t know what’s going on.”
Baekhyun nods. “Lets go out there.”
Luhan gauks. “Didn’t you hear what I just said?” Luhan gets to his feet and begins to pace. “We can’t just leave! We don’t know what it’s like out there. We don’t know how many infected are inside the fences.”
Baekhyun stands up and approaches Luhan. He grabs him by the shoulders and makes him stop pacing. “Luhan, we won’t know unless we leave.”
Luhan stares at Baekhyun as his thoughts race through his brain.
Baekhyun is right. Luhan keeps saying they don’t know and there is only one way for them to find out. They have to go outside the bunker, they have to see it with their own eyes.
“If it’s bad we just come back here.” Baekhyun says with a shrug.
Luhan looks at the younger man. He can see that Baekhyun is trying to stay calm but the fear in his eyes is hard to hide. He is being brave and strong and Luhan is slowly falling apart.
Luhan realizes that he has to be brave like Baekhyun. If the two of them want to survive this then Luhan has to be stronger. He can’t fall apart now. It could be bad outside. The whole village could be decimated. He has to prepare himself for the worst and not be scared when he sees that the worst has become reality.
“Lets go.”

“Chanyeol?” Joonmyun looks confused. “Why are you here?”
Chanyeol is out of breath. “I-- I didn’t know where else to go. There were fifteen of them chasing me and your house was the only one I recognized in the area.”
Joonmyun crosses the room and stands in front of Chanyeol. “Did they follow you into the house?” He asks voice equal parts concerned and afraid.
Chanyeol shakes his head. “Kris saw the infected chasing me and started killing them.”
Tao glares at Chanyeol. “Why didn’t you help him?”
“I didn’t have a weapon. I wouldn’t have been much help.” Chanyeol spits right before he collapses to the ground a second later.
Tao watches uncomfortably as Chanyeol’s tears began to fall in waves. Joonmyun knelt down and pulled Chanyeol to him whispering something that only the two of them could hear.
Tao sat back down against the wall and stared blankly in front of him. It wasn’t until Chanyeol and Joonmyun began to talk in regular voices did he come back to the present.
“I left Luhan and Baekhyun in their bunker but there’s no food in there. I have to get back to them.” Chanyeol said.
“You can’t go back out there.” Joonmyun says.
Chanyeol nods. “I know but I have to, I can’t leave them in there. It won’t be long before they think they have to go out themselves. Baekhyun will think they have to leave and he will convince Luhan.” Chanyeol runs a hand down his face. “They’ll die as soon as they’re out the door.”
Joonmyun nods. “We aren’t prepared. We don’t have any weapons.” Joonmyun stands up and looks at Tao and Sehun who are sitting on different sides of the room still. “We should wait for Kris.”
Tao agrees with Joonmyun. “He’s the most experienced with the infected if we want to get to Baekhyun and Luhan alive then we will need his help.” Tao said.
Chanyeol nodded seemingly content with this plan.
They of course, were all silent, they were all too caught up in their thoughts of their loved ones to speak.
An hour or so later Tao was about to nod off when the bunker door swung open and Kris dropped down into the bunker. Tao jumped to his feet but then froze suddenly realizing what he was about to do.
Instead of throwing himself into Kris’s arms like he really wanted to do, he stood there awkwardly.
Joonmyun spoke first. “Are you alright?”
Kris nodded. “I killed at least twenty of them and then managed to get away.” He turns to Tao as he says this.
Joonmyun jumps right into action pulling Kris aside and whispering to him. Kris whispers back frantically. Tao wishes he could hear what they are saying but he’s pretty sure he knows the gist of it already. Joonmyun must be telling him about their make-shift plan. Kris doesn’t seem to be taking it too well though.
“Okay then.” Joonmyun says. “We have decided,” he turns to face everyone. “We will go get Baekhyun and Luhan. Me and Chanyeol are staying though.”
Chanyeol says nothing. He seems to have no fight left in him.
“Well lets go.” Sehun says suddenly at the bunker door. “I want to get out of here.”
Tao doesn’t understand why Sehun wants to go out there so bad.
Tao sighs and goes to the Bunker door with Sehun. Even though there is something strange building in his chest, a feeling he can’t put his finger on, he’s still eager to get out.
Right before they leave the bunker Kris turns to Chanyeol and Joonmyun. “If we’re not back within five hours assume the worst. It’s bad out there.”
Tao, Sehun and Kris leave the bunker not knowing what’s going to happen to them.

“Chanyeol?” Joonmyun looks confused. “Why are you here?”
Chanyeol is out of breath. “I-- I didn’t know where else to go. There were fifteen of them chasing me and your house was the only one I recognized in the area.”
Joonmyun crosses the room and stands in front of Chanyeol. “Did they follow you into the house?” He asks voice equal parts concerned and afraid.
Chanyeol shakes his head. “Kris saw the infected chasing me and started killing them.”
Tao glares at Chanyeol. “Why didn’t you help him?”
“I didn’t have a weapon. I wouldn’t have been much help.” Chanyeol spits right before he collapses to the ground a second later.
Tao watches uncomfortably as Chanyeol’s tears began to fall in waves. Joonmyun knelt down and pulled Chanyeol to him whispering something that only the two of them could hear.
Tao sat back down against the wall and stared blankly in front of him. It wasn’t until Chanyeol and Joonmyun began to talk in regular voices did he come back to the present.
“I left Luhan and Baekhyun in their bunker but there’s no food in there. I have to get back to them.” Chanyeol said.
“You can’t go back out there.” Joonmyun says.
Chanyeol nods. “I know but I have to, I can’t leave them in there. It won’t be long before they think they have to go out themselves. Baekhyun will think they have to leave and he will convince Luhan.” Chanyeol runs a hand down his face. “They’ll die as soon as they’re out the door.”
Joonmyun nods. “We aren’t prepared. We don’t have any weapons.” Joonmyun stands up and looks at Tao and Sehun who are sitting on different sides of the room still. “We should wait for Kris.”
Tao agrees with Joonmyun. “He’s the most experienced with the infected if we want to get to Baekhyun and Luhan alive then we will need his help.” Tao said.
Chanyeol nodded seemingly content with this plan.
They of course, were all silent, they were all too caught up in their thoughts of their loved ones to speak.
An hour or so later Tao was about to nod off when the bunker door swung open and Kris dropped down into the bunker. Tao jumped to his feet but then froze suddenly realizing what he was about to do.
Instead of throwing himself into Kris’s arms like he really wanted to do, he stood there awkwardly.
Joonmyun spoke first. “Are you alright?”
Kris nodded. “I killed at least twenty of them and then managed to get away.” He turns to Tao as he says this.
Joonmyun jumps right into action pulling Kris aside and whispering to him. Kris whispers back frantically. Tao wishes he could hear what they are saying but he’s pretty sure he knows the gist of it already. Joonmyun must be telling him about their make-shift plan. Kris doesn’t seem to be taking it too well though.
“Okay then.” Joonmyun says. “We have decided,” he turns to face everyone. “We will go get Baekhyun and Luhan. Me and Chanyeol are staying though.”
Chanyeol says nothing. He seems to have no fight left in him.
“Well lets go.” Sehun says suddenly at the bunker door. “I want to get out of here.”
Tao doesn’t understand why Sehun wants to go out there so bad.
Tao sighs and goes to the Bunker door with Sehun. Even though there is something strange building in his chest, a feeling he can’t put his finger on, he’s still eager to get out.
Right before they leave the bunker Kris turns to Chanyeol and Joonmyun. “If we’re not back within five hours assume the worst. It’s bad out there.”
Tao, Sehun and Kris leave the bunker not knowing what’s going to happen to them.
