Brief post-mangaverse MisaoYahiko oneshot:

Summary: Yahiko has a crush. Misao is oblivious. Kenji is sleepy. [3rd person Misao POV, YahikoMisao]

Misao smiled down at Kenji, who was snuggled in her arms.

The Himuras and Yahiko had been in Kyoto for two weeks, and Misao and Yahiko decided to save them from the terrible two’s, and got them reservations at a restaurant that was not the Aoiya or the Shirobeko. Both of them had protested to no end, but Yahiko had pulled them aside and yelled at them and now they were (hopefully) off having a good time.

Of course, knowing them, they could’ve just gone to a soba stand and then find a nice secluded spot near a creek to talk and watch the stars-
Misao closed her eyes and shook her head. Bad thoughts. Ew.

Kenji shifted in her arms and mumbled something incoherent. Misao smiled. When he was sleeping, he was so cute!

She wondered if her children would be as cute as Kenji. Probably not, just because Kenji’s parents were cute too-“Sappy,” Yahiko called it-and Aoshi-sama was not cute in any way.

Well, except for his butt, which was very cute.

Yahiko was doing a kata in the yard, his shinai whispering as it cut through the air. Even he was taller than her now-but then, he had topped Kenshin and Kaoru as well, and was now edging in on Megumi.

He sure had grown up. He was handsome, in a way that reminded her of the best of Sano and Kenshin blended in with a little Kaoru. They had raised him well. She smiled, and watched his face, his eyes seeing some invisible opponent, intense, his mouth set, biting his lower lip-

Come to think of it, Yahiko had a cute butt too.

She blushed. That was Yahiko she was thinking about!

He finished the kata and wiped his forehead, smiling. “Hey, Misao,” he called when he saw her on the porch, Kenji in her arms.

“Good workout?” Misao called.

He nodded, coming over to the porch to sit next to her. “Yeah. I need to work harder, though-Kaoru can still kick my ass.”

Misao laughed. “It’s going to be a fact of life, Yahiko-even when Kaoru-san is old and gray and can’t walk, she’ll still be able to defeat you in a sparring match. She knows you too well.”

Yahiko rolled his eyes. “Probably.”

Kenji opened his eyes and grabbed the sleeve of Yahiko’s gi, burrowing his face in Misao’s shoulder.

Misao laughed. “He’s so cute!”

“Try saying that when he’s climbing the dojo.”

“Already?” Misao asked.

“He’s like Kenshin, only stupid,” Yahiko said.

“Be nice, Yahiko-chan!” Misao snapped, smacking him lightly on the shoulder. “This is Kenji! He’s probably as brillint as Himura and just as good at faking it!”

“Whatever you say, weasel girl,” Yahiko said, and then muttered, “And don’t call me Yahiko-chan.”

Misao grinned. “Why shouldn’t I? You’re still just a little kid!”

Yahiko flushed. “I’m fifteen, thank you very much!”

“Yeah? Well, I’m twenty. So there, Yahiko-chan!”

Yahiko quieted and looked away, muttering.

Misao frowned, and then smacked him again. “Heey! What’d I say?”

“Nothing,” Yahiko said quietly. “I’m fine, weasel girl.”

Misao glared at him.

Kenji let out a light, childish snore.

“Aw, that’s so cute!” Misao squealed quietly.

Yahiko snorted. “I didn’t know he was still doing that. Maybe we ought to go back to the doctor’s.”

“A cold?” Misao asked.

He nodded. “It was a lot worse while we were in Tokyo, but the weather’s nicer here right now. It’s been raining almost nonstop in Tokyo for the past few months. I didn’t know he was still snoring.”

“Probably nothing. Just keep making sure he’s getting his rest and he’s warm at night. Okon and Shiro’s kid had one last winter and it lasted a long time.”

Yahiko nodded.

“Hey!” Misao said. “You got a girlfriend?”

Yahiko blinked at her. “What?”

“Girlfriend. You. How ‘bout it?”

He shrugged. “Not really. Tsubame and I are just friends now.”

“That’s okay?” she asked.

He grinned. “Yeah, it’s fine. How about you and the ice cube?”

Misao sighed. “I don’t know…”

“That bad, huh?”

She frowned. “The truth is, I don’t even know if I want it anymore.” She looked down at the toddler on her and sighed again. “I mean, I want a family, but-I don’t know if I want one with Aoshi-sama anymore.” She touched Kenji’s hair, longing in her gaze. “I mean, I’m twenty years old, and I’m not closer to getting married than I was five years ago. I’m starting to wonder if I’ll just be an old maid. Miserable for the rest of my life.“

Yahiko’s hand closed over hers. “Don’t say that!”

“Huh?” she blinked up at him.

“Makimachi Misao, you are young and pretty, and you have plenty of time to get married still! I mean, what man-other than Kenshin, he doesn’t count-wouldn’t like to marry you? I don’t know why Aoshi doesn’t see it-I mean, I would-“ and then he flushed hotly.

“What?” Misao asked, eyes wide.

He blushed harder, his cheeks now rivaling the color of Kenshin’s hair. “No, it’s nothing.”

“Yahiko, what are you talking about?”

“Nothing,” he said quickly. “We should put Kenji to bed.”

She looked down, oddly disappointed. “Yeah, I guess.”

They were quiet as they laid out Kenji’s small futon next to Kenshin’s and Kaoru’s. Misao changed his clothes and combed his hair and tucked him in. Kenji curled up in a ball, sticking his thumb in his mouth.

Misao smiled. “He really is cute,” she said.

“Yeah,” Yahiko said, looking at her.

They walked down the hallway to their respective rooms. “I’m going to change and practice,” Misao said finally. “Do you wanna wait downstairs for Kaoru-san and Himura? I can join you later if you want.”

“Sure,” Yahiko said.

She slid open the shoji, and turned to him. He seemed to be waiting for something, though she wasn’t sure what. “Yahiko?”

A calloused hand touched her cheek and then his lips just barely brushed hers. "If I'd been Aoshi," he said, and she suddenly realized he was finishing his thought from earlier, "I'd have jumped you a long time ago."

He paused, their breaths mingling, the heat radiating off his face, and then soft chapped lips covered hers for a brief moment, almost chaste but not quite. “I’ll…see you later, Misao,” Yahiko said quickly, his face furiously red again. He bowed just slightly and jogged away.

Misao pressed her fingers to her lips, eyes wide.

Then she smiled.
