After giving my mind and body the breather that it deserves I finally have a chance to assess a few things in my life. Sometimes I do get too caught up in my thoughts, and pay too little attention to what is going on around me. I'm a day dreamer. I guess its that wild imagination of mine. But thats me.
Faith is once again becoming very important to me. Not God. But having the discpline to believe. And I don't mean following some book or having an idea. But just knowing truth and accepting it.
Yesterday in philosphy we read a short story. It was about a fantasy city called Omelas. This is a perfect city. everyone is happy. There is no ruler, there are no laws, and there is no crime. Everyone just lives and lives happily. But there is a terrible twist to this city. Under one of the houses, in a dark cellar, there is a locked broom closet. and in this closet is a child. It is 10 years of age, but due to it's malenutrition it looks 6. The child has lived it's life in this closet since it was seperated from it's mother. We refer to the child as it because it's gender is indistinguisable due to the abuse. Everyone in the town knows the child is there. and every child is brought before the suffering kid to see it. There is always an adult present, and sometimes the adults kick or beat the child. the child is fed nothing but creame corn, grease, and water. it sits in it's own excrement. Many of the children cry after seeing the abused child. most want to help it. but all know that they cannot. because to help this child would destroy the happiness of Omelas, and send the city into ruin. But not every kid crys. some, upon seeing the child, go into a state of shock, and walk straight out of Omelas never to return.
The point of this story is to represent real life. We are all aware of the suffering of many people, but we go on living our lives. This is because to leave our happy lives would be to desecrate them. Upon exposing ourselves to the poverty and horrors of this world we would waken ourselves to a very harsh reality. Yet some of us choose to live in acknolledgement of the world's suffering, and some even choose to help.
Just know that naperville is a bubble. we know not the harsheness of the world here. Think about it sometime. and never forget.
