Writing from Andrea: Rear Wheel Push

 Rear Wheel Push

Sun too hot
and sweat making awkward patterns
on shirts and sundresses

Light through leaves is green
on grass the color of
bleached hair
Peroxide or sunshine
is beside the point

Lean against the
broken car
notice a beetle the size of your palm
the impossible jump of a cricket
the distance
back
to the house by the creek
forward
to town or neighbors
all too far
for forward
to be the choice

Shadows are longer
every minute
the beetle trundles home
on the line of a grass-stalk’s shade
and you follow
dreaming of creek-mud between toes
and lightning cracks
above the lake

writing, sunshine, poetry
