ABC Television said on Tuesday it was going ahead with its comedy "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" despite the sudden death last week of its star, actor John Ritter (news).
Llyod Braun, chairman of the ABC Entertainment Television Group, told reporters that future episodes of the show would look at how a family experiences the loss of a father.
"After much introspection and discussion with all parties, we are going to go forward with the show. ... As it feels right, comedy will be introduced back into the show," Braun said.
Braun said the network would air the three new episodes already recorded by Ritter as planned starting on Sept. 23, and then show repeats while writers fleshed out the new story line. The program was a modest hit for ABC last year and the network had counted on it as a centerpiece of its family friendly lineup for the upcoming television season.
