New York Times on Love in 2D

The New York Times Magazine has posted a lengthy article about Japan's obsession with two dimensional characters, & how it's affecting their society. Characters in anime & video games, as well as anime dolls, are discussed. But of particular notice are otaku who are in love with dakimakura, or body pillows with character cover art. Many Japanese otaku have "real" relationships with these pillows & take them outside on dates.

The author of the article cites the reason for such anti-social behavior has to do with 25% of Japanese 30-34 are virgins, & half of them have no friends of the opposite sex. It's quite the interesting & enlightening article, so make sure to check out the whole thing here:
