I see your point but, I never saw a problem with her in the show. She should have been much worse with how mind-f*cked everyone is. But Rei is the "popular" one isn't she. I don't understand that though but you did say Asuka comes back next movie though. So that's not so bad.
It appears she somehow comes back for 3.0, yes. But we can't say for sure what's going on until it actually comes out, or at least until trailers begin to roll out. =\
still, new girl suddenly comes in, trying to replace ASUKA.... FUCKING ASUKA.... I doubt even you would be able to argue with that. But yeah, Mari could still be salvageable just so long as Asuka manages to regain her massively important role to the plot in 3.0 (but if the plot's really changing that much, then it's probably unlikely we're gonna get the "everyone on earth is locked in some kind of single-minded purgatory except for the two people insane enough to break from its loop" ending anyway

Rei's rescue vs Asuka being abandoned: you might remember a very similar event happening in the TV series-- Gendou refusing to deploy Eva-01 to save Asuka when she was in trouble, but later sending it to save Rei, which broke Asuka's heart and her willpower once and for all.
