Top US Manga for Q1 2009

ICv2 has once again published their lists for the top selling graphic novel titles for the first quarter of the year. In addition, they also revealed that sales of traditional graphic novels in 2008 grew by 5% to $395 million, up from $375 million in 2007. The top selling manga titles from the end of last year keep up their streak for the most part in 2009. The top 5 selling titles for Winter 2009 aren't surprising at all. For that matter, but of the top 10 are pretty predictable. Here is a complete list of the top 25 manga:

Top 25 Manga Properties Q1 2009:
  1. Naruto
  2. Fruits Basket
  3. Vampire Knight
  4. Bleach
  5. Death Note
  6. Rosario & Vampire
  7. Chibi Vampire (Karin)
  8. Maxiumum Ride
  9. Tsubasa
  10. Bakugan
  11. Negima!
  12. Yu-Gi-Oh!
  13. Otomen
  14. Shugo Chara
  15. D. Grayman
  16. Skip Beat
  17. One Piece
  18. Gentlemen's Alliance
  19. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  20. Captive Hearts
  21. In Odd We Trust
  22. Nora: Last Chronicle of Devildom
  23. Black Cat
  24. Phoenix Wright
  25. Higurashi: When They Cry
Nice to see Phoenix Wright, Haruhi, & Shugo Chara on the list. Yu-Gi-Oh is also still doing surprisingly well considering the manga finished some time ago & that the franchise is past its fad stage. ICv2 also had separate lists for more specific categories, such as the top selling shonen & shojo titles:

Top 10 Shonen Properties Q1 2009:
  1. Naruto
  2. Bleach
  3. Death Note
  4. Rosario & Vampire
  5. Chibi Vampire (Karin)
  6. Tsubasa
  7. Negima
  8. D. Grayman
  9. One Piece
  10. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Top 10 Shojo Properties Q1 2009:
  1. Fruits Basket
  2. Vampire Knight
  3. Otomen
  4. Shugo Chara
  5. Skip Beat
  6. Gentlemen's Alliance
  7. Captive Hearts
  8. Ouran High School
  9. Heaven's Will
  10. Trinity Blood
For the top selling shonen properties, it should be noted that some of them have very strong female readerships. Most notably RosaVam, Karin, & Tsubasa might even have their female American readers eclipse their male ones. I'm also surprised that they'd consider Haruhi to be a shonen title. While true that the story often caters to male fans, Yen Press has been pushing Haruhi hard to get a strong teen female following as well. & as for the shojo titles... Trinity Blood?

Finally, one manga title also found its way onto the Top 10 Kids & Tweens graphic novel list. Bakugan was the only true Japanese title on the list, but it made it all the way up to #2. The only title to beat it there was the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
