My Santa DVD Review
AnimeOnDVD has got a review up of FUNimation's recent release of Itsudatte- My Santa from Ken Akamatsu (of Negima & Love Hina fame). We've shown the short OVA series numerous times over the past few years during the festive holidays, but now you can actually own a copy on DVD or put it underneath an anime fan's Christmas tree. & since it somehow got away with a PG rating (despite tons of fan-service & some nudity), you can show it to your little 7 year old brother as well! (Note: Nebs doesn't recommend doing this.)
But now here's an interesting fact that's more prevalent now than back when we first showed it- Mai was actually voiced by Aya Hirano before she made it big as Haruhi & Konata! I am curious how the dub turned out, but for an overall summary of the American release, Chris Beveridge had this to say about it:
With it being nine years since the manga was first published and Akamatsu hip deep in Negima, never mind that it took seven years to make this into an anime, I doubt we'll see any more. Hence, it's a very good low commitment holiday release you don't mind pulling out once a year. My Santa is light, silly, full of fanservice yet has a nice amount of heart to it in the first episode that it clicks well enough. When faced with the dazzling array of Christmas themed specials across so many shows on TV this season, this one didn't feel anywhere near as obnoxious as what's been created in the last few years in North America. My Santa had me smiling numerous times throughout and enjoying the fanservice but it's definitely a fluffy show that's got very little filling to it.
