Episode 27: The Saiyan Formerly Known As Prince
Here was the conundrum that fell upon TeamFourStar & LittleKuriboh- how do you make Freeza funny, while still keeping him menacing & evil? Oh sure, it's easy to depict Freeza as a flaming transgendered homosexual, but taking that easy route, there's no way to show Freeza's insidious side. At the same time, this is a comedy spoof, so they can't make him too diabolical. & for this episode, they truly needed to balance those two sides of him. A seemingly impossible task, but both in the writing & voice acting, they succeed in aces.
I do enjoy the emphasis on the distance between Goku & Gohan. I mean think about it. Between the time DBZ begins, with Gohan as an infant, to the end of the series, how much time DO the two of them actually spend together? It's really just the time Future Trunks warns them about the androids, to Goku's death at the hands of Cell. So in the approximately 15 year span of DBZ, father & son spend only about 3 years together. The rest of that time, Goku's mostly dead or off on a separate planet.
In a way I'm a bit disapointed over how quickly they got through Vegeta's death scene. It's one of my favorite moments in the whole series. Actually, both of Vegeta's death scenes (the other during the Buu saga) are among my favorites. & it's not like I'm a huge fan of his character either. But as I said earlier, this is first & utmost a parody, & they can't delve too deep into the melodramatic side of DBZ. & who knows, they might touch on it a bit in the beginning of the next episode.
