and just think, they had a chance to actually redeem themselves several years ago. Funimation started out as a questionable localizer, but look where they are now. 4kids could've gone that same route way back in 2004 or so, when they announced uncut DVDs and previewed an English version of the first One Piece opening, We Are.... and yet, within just a matter of months, they completely fucked that up. Oh god, how they fucked that up. You know you've crossed the line when Toei, a company that for the most part doesn't seem to give a crap about how their properties are treated in other countries, decides to simply yank the rights to One Piece away from them. Given how they've struggled since losing Pokemon (and One Piece shortly afterwards, though they never took advantage of marketing it anyway, and as a result, the series is forced to live in Naruto's shadow on this side of the ocean), Yu-gi-oh! was clearly the only thing left keeping them afloat, and when I heard about this lawsuit, I just KNEW that was gonna be the final nail in the coffin for them.
Good riddance, I say. I said it before, and I'll say it again: we don't owe these people a damn thing. Some people blindly praise them for popularizing anime in the west, but that's simply not the case (Nintendo, and later Konami, just wanted a localizer, it could've been anyone). The online streams were nice, but in the end, they were just too little too late. Now, we can only hope that the rights to every series they've licensed (especially ones like Shaman King, which they've just been sitting on for years without so much as a televised rerun) can now be freed up and eventually go into the hands of much more competent companies.
We can only hope. I also hope the voice actors are able to find work in the other companies without much trouble. I would hate to lose Dan Green. XD I feel sorry for the other workers too who will lose their jobs during this low economy, but they only have the 4Kids bosses to blame.
Here's praying that only good comes out of this. That horrible company has been around too long. >^_^< MEOW!
what's really sad is that the man who was mostly responsible this company's wrong-doings, that fucker Al Kahn, managed to get away with everything he did by retiring when he could.... a mere couple months before this crap came about, no less. If I had any major complaint about this whole ordeal, it'd be how Kahn managed to pull off a Karma Houdini like this.
