Funimation Discontinues Geneon Titles

Feb 21, 2011 22:55

It seems that FUNimation is letting their once heroic act of rescuing many of Geneon's titles come to an end, as they are discontinuing anime series that they've been distributing for Geneon over the past two years. First, before we go on any further, something needs to be made crystal clear if you don't understand it already.

See, there are two different types of rescue-licenses that FUNimation has done for Geneon these past two & a half years. The first type is where FUNimation agreed to distribute titles on Geneon's behalf. In other words, Geneon still owned the titles, but Funi took over releasing them on DVD for them. That initial long list of titles from Anime Expo 2008 were of this type, and these are the titles that FUNimation is discontinuing. The second type of license-rescue is where FUNimation actually took over licensing rights to the series & owned them lock, stock, & barrel. Most Geneon titles that Funi announced after the initial 2008 list fall into this second category, and are safe. These include titles like Trigun, Girls Bravo, & Vandread. But the following list of titles aren't so lucky, as they have been officially discontinued by FUNimation:

  • Black Lagoon Season 1 & 2
  • Ergo Proxy
  • Gungrave
  • Hellsing Ultimate
  • Kamichu
  • Karin (Chibi Vampire)
  • Kyo Kara Maoh Season 1
  • Kyo Kara Maoh!, Season 2
  • Law of Ueki
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A
  • Paradise Kiss
  • Rozen Maiden + Traumend Season 1 & 2
  • Shana (Shakugan no Shana)
  • Tales of Phantasia
  • The Familiar of Zero
  • Story of Saiunkoku
  • When They Cry: Higurashi
Now, don't despair completely quite just yet. Some of these titles are expected to return under FUNimation's care, & this time as a full license-rescue where Funi becomes the actual licensee & not just a distributor for Geneon. Series like Shana, Hellsing, & Black Lagoon are safe bets, as Funi has announced that they've licensed sequels for these, so naturally they're interested in them & want the earlier episodes. But many of the more obscure titles, like Kyo Kara Maoh, Story of Saiunkoku, & Higurashi, are probably royally screwed. In short, if you haven't bought the boxsets for these series yet, you better find them while you still can.
