Seeing as I go to some of the largest conventions in the world I would hardly just call it "a group of convention-going nerds." XD These cons have 50,000+ attendees each day. It also sounds like a very narrow statement. I know several lawyers, doctors, scientists, teachers, playboy bunnies, firemen, police officers, and pretty much any occupation you can think of who go to these conventions.
Besides, how do you think games like Magic got so popular outside of game shops? I don't doubt Nintendo would have gotten the idea to make an English version anyway with how quickly the Japanese cards were already selling on our shores. (I wish I still had the "play book" with the old card translations that was done by one group. XD)

As for Fire Emblem and other games, it looks to me that games have a harder time of being brought over than anime does. I could name several that were internationally popular (and OMG-wanted by fans all over the country) but never managed a US-release (and thus the failure of Dreamcast, which had been a good system...with few of the games gamers were clamoring for). I don't know the details on why as the people I know in the game industry are developers and designers as opposed to the folks in charge.

On the other hand, the TV people seem more willing to take risks if something is already popular overseas. We just have to hope they bring over the real thing and not try to make an "American version" of it. I shudder to think if Toon Makers's version of Sailor Moon had been given the green light, DiC had been bad enough. (On an unrelated note, my God I hope Toei lets Funimation have the license to Sailor Moon now that it's been refurbished for a global revival! They've been trying to license it for years. There's even been hints they would do a total redub!)

Yes, it was hard getting fansubs back then since outlets were fewer and had to be physically gotten to (House of Anime, baby!). Can you imagine making an AMV with an audio/game system and two VCRs? Or how about rendering a fandub parody? It's so nice that these things are easily done digitally now. XD

And wow, how to make me feel old. XD Before Dragonball was brought over I played "Dragon Power" on my NES, I think it was 1989-90, the US-release of "Dragon Ball: Shenlong no Nazo." One of the wishes you could get from the Dragon was (dun dun dun!) a sandwich. XD

On another note, Funimation might have grabbed Pokemon if 4Kids hadn't. Dragonball (US 1995) and DBZ (US 1996) worked out real well for them, and our much loved Pocket Monsters (JP 1996) may have looked like the next big thing on the list. I bet they would have done a better job. XD Too bad they didn't grab Yu-Gi-Oh.

MEOW!
