Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli has announced what their next animated classic feature film will be. This time around, Ghibli is adapting the shoujo manga "Kokuriko-Zaka Kara," which was published in the 1980's in Japan. Once again, Hayao Miyazaki himself wont be directing, but rather the honors will go to his son Goro Miyazaki. This is Goro's second movie as director, after 2006's
Gedo Senki. Critics generally agreed that the apple had fallen far from the tree with Goro's work on Gedo Senki, but hopefully he's come a long way since then. Not to mention doing a shoujo story that takes place in 1963 is quite different from the fantasy adventure setting in his first film.
Due out in Japanese theaters in Summer 2011, "Kokuriko-Zaka Kara" is the second part of Studio Ghibli's five-year plan, following the release of
Karigurashi no Arrietty earlier this year. Ghibli revealed at the end of 2009 that the studio would be focusing on young up & coming directors for the first three years/films, & the final two years would be devoted to producing "epics."
