The second season of
Strike Witches is finally getting released on DVD & Blu-ray in Japan, & fans of the pants-free lolis finally get to enjoy the girls in all their uncensored glory. Well, sorta. The discs do contain nudity & other suggestive content not seen in the TV broadcasts. For instance, scenes of the girls bathing in nothing but towels have now had the towels removed. But while one form of censorship was taken out, another was added in.
Sure topless girls are okay to show in anime (no matter what the age, apparently), but showing the nether regions shall always be a no-no. As such, since the towels are now gone, the animators needed to do something about covering up the girls’ bare frontal lower area. So even though these are the fully unedited form of the series, viewers are now treated to one of the most annoying forms of censorship in all of anime- the
mysteriously appearing convenient rays of light. It’s truly quite odd seeing those things added to an uncut version of the series when they were not even there in the edited broadcast version. Makes you wonder if they couldn’t come up with any better alternatives instead. At least all the original mysterious light beams from the TV version were removed from the discs despite the new ones added (NSFW):
