DragonBall Z Kai Dub Clips Online
The picture on the left is from 1996's syndicated version of Saban's DragonBall Z heavily censored dub. The picture on the right is from 2010's Nicktoons version of FUNimation's DragonBall Z Kai heavily censored dub. Oh how far we've come.
Funi gave us our first taste of the new DragonBall Z Kai dub during FuniCon 3.0, & now the official Nicktoons website has unceremoniously added five clips of the English version onto their website. As thought by many, Nick's version of the series will be heavily censored, even more so than the Japanese version. In addition to editing Master Roshi's adult beverage, another clip showing Bardock battle against Freeza not only has all his blood removed, but even his iconic scar across his face as well. At the very least it seems Nick has no qualms of showing characters dying, just as long as there's nothing graphic about it. Who knows, maybe they'll revive Saban's ingenious censorship of sending defeated characters to the "other dimension!"
The good news is that the dub will still be using the original Japanese music, & seems to be pretty faithful to the original version. Tienshinhan is referred to as Tienshinhan, for example. Most likely, FUNimation dubbed this series with having the DVD/Blu-ray versions in mind, & any changes made for the Nicktoons version were an afterthought. This is pretty much the opposite approach taken when DBZ was originally dubbed. You can check out the clips for yourself below:
