Universal Studios & Studio Khara's Hideaki Anno formally announced today their involvement with the release of the live-action film adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The live-action version has
been in the planning stages for years, but now it's finally happening for real. As it turns out, it'll actually be a four-part film series, with each flick consisting of about 90 minutes.
The studios announced that Eric Wereheim (Tom Goes to the Mayor; Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job) will be directing all four films. Wereheim was quick to point out at the press conference that several changes will have to be made for the Westernized version of the story. For one, due to pressure from the Catholic Church, the monsters in the story will no longer be Angels, but rather the Corrinean alien race (as seen in Awesome Show).
Wereheim also said he plans to make the "Neon" part of the title literal, with 1980s color schemes, clothing designs, & haircuts used throughout. Gendo will wear hot pink shutter shades, the kids' plugsuits will be designed after the outfits used by the band Poison during their 1987 world tour, & everyone will be sporting Flock of Seagulls hairdo (so no change for Rei).
Along with the assistance of Tim Heidecker & a CasioTone keyboard, Wereheim will also be scoring all four films as well.
