The overall top anime movies in the Japanese box office for 2009 have been revealed. While no movie came close to matching 2008's Ponyo, which grossed 15.5 billion yen (~$170 million), more films passed the 1 billion yen mark than any other year. A total of nine different movies passed the magical mark, with the
newest Pokemon film topping them all with close to 5 billion yen (~$50 million).
Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 came in second at 4 billion yen (~$43 million), more than double of what 1.0 earned in theaters. The latest
Detective Conan movie came in third with 3.5 billion yen (~$37 million), more than any of the other 12 Conan movies that came before it. The full list:
