~I've had it in my mind to donate a few copies of The Explanation to my local library once I published the thing. I suppose that was a little naive of me given the following information, which while it does not really surprise me, does dishearten.

When I checked out some books from the Austin Public Library (main branch) on women's rights and abortion, one of the books had pages and pages struck through with black marker, with admonitions such as 'This is the work of the Devil!';, 'You will burn in hell for reading this!!' and so on all through the margins. I was baffled that anyone would have taken the time to do this, and shocked at the sheer intensity of the anger it reflected throughout.
Of course, I called the library and took the book right back so I wouldn't have to pay for the defacing.
When I arrived, the librarian told me some thing interesting. She said that this was happening so often that the library was considering allocating the funds toward other subject areas, because it wasn't worth it to buy a book and put it on the shelves only to have this happen again within a week or two. It was an open secret that someone; or more likely a bunch of people, had made it their calling to censor our public libraries for us. According to her, other librarians from across the country were saying the same thing was happening to them.
In the intervening years, our anonymous 'benefactors' have become smarter. They no longer take the time and the risk of defacing books and returning them. They just steal them, and destroy them. I have a source in the Univ of TX library system who tells me it has been going on there for years, too.
Now Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism books are on the agenda, too. Books on homosexuality, on Atheism, and anything the religious right is opposed to are on the chopping block. These books don't stay on the shelves, and libraries can't afford to buy books which walk away over and over again.”
Have no doubt that this a War and that these people cannot be reasoned with. They need to control the narrative because their ideology cannot stand up to close examination, at least not from a so-called 'pluralistic point of view'.
What has happened - and continues to happen - is that the moderates on all sides are driven off and/or silenced and those that 'remain upon the field' must become radicalized in order to even stand in place...which is where something like The Temple comes in.
I said a number of years ago, "Personally, I have already declared war on these Judeo-Christlamic mother fuckers. They've been so worried about Communist mankilling lesbian witches...well, now they're going to get them!" Such was inevitable. They allow no middle ground whatsoever. And now they have invoked something beyond their worse fears.
