~I'm finding myself praying that Assad uses chemical weapons this weekend so that all the whinging about Sandy Hook gets wiped off the news cycle

Kinda surprised to see someone else saying this. I make posts like this often when the US has such 'tragedies'. There are constant individual tragedies even in our own country that go ignored. When something high profile like this happens it gives Americans a chance to pretend to to have compassion. I was thinking of making a post on this one but busied myself with other things instead. You pretty much summed it up.
Stumbled on your post on the latest posts page that I peruse when needing total randomness...
But when our own 'precious little darlings' suffer the same fate the whole fucking world must stop and weep. Well fuck you, you self absorbed sons of bitches!

Let me say this again: "Additional gun control will no more stop these killings than Prohibition stopped alcoholism. Within this decade we will be able to make effective guns with 3D printers. And that's just the start. O'Brave New World, things are going to get a lot more dangerous until we have some real social justice. That is the 'only thing' that will finally stop this cycle of violence. And what will need to be done to achieve that is still Too Much for most of us."
RE: 'gun culture'. Roughly 90,000,000 Americans own apx 300,000,000 firearms of various types. Gun Culture IS American Culture. That cannot be legislated away.

I was hating hearing about gun control and now I've got several people whining, "but WHY can't we talk about gun control?!"
1: It's totally not the issue (I actually think the one people should be thinking about is brick and mortar schools, but I already vented that all out somewhere else) and
2: It's selfish to use someone else's tragedy to push an agenda they may or may not agree with. It really does nothing for your case when you show a total disregard for the victims.
Innocent people (including children) get killed in car accidents all the time. Are we going to ban cars too? Well of course not. Funny how the slightest threat to someone's comfort and convenience will change their position so fast.
