B&W header tut

Mar 02, 2007 21:53

As per request from my friend surfgirl83, I've created this header tut...

Going from

to

Note: This is a rather long tut, since I really pimped this image out lol But the results are quite cool, I think.

1. Start as always, by sharpening your base, etc.

2. (Since my image was very dark, I had to do two steps to lighten it. You may not need to.)
Duplicate the base and set to screen, 50%

3. It was still too dark for my taste so I created a Curves adjustment layer.
Settings:
RBG
Input: 105
Output: 161

Then I decreased the opacity of that layer to 80%

4. Create a new layer and fill with #0B254F. Set to exclusion, 55%

5. Another new layer, filled with #B3E2F5, set to burn, 40%.

6. Take this texture (by ?). You may want to make it slightly smaller but it isn't necessary. Set to screen, 50%

7. Duplicate the base, bring it to the top and set to soft light, 30%

8. Add this texture (Again, I forgot the maker. But they are credited in my resources somewhere.) and set to multiply, 40%

9. Take this texture (by vert_gazon. I remembered!) and drag it to bottom corner of your image. Either corner, as long as it comes up from the border of the image. Set to screen, 60%

10. Add this light texture (By ___) and, again, drag it to the bottom of the image. Screen, 70%

11. Yet another texture to add (this one by the ever-talented gender). Screen, 50%. This one you may want to edit, so as not to obstruct your subject. I got lucky and Richard fit right into the black middle area.

12. Copy your base again and bring to the top. Soft light, 50%

13. Another Curves layer.
RBG
I: 148
O: 180

Reduce opacity to 70%

14. If you'd like, add a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer to add some extra contrast.

15. Add this scratch texture (I want to say this is also by gender) on screen, 80%

16. Next I added various handwriting, waterspot and grunge brushes in black, set on either multiply or burn and at varying opacities. Go nuts with this step, it's up to you.

17. Add this brush (made by myself) along one edge of your image, in black. Set to soft light, 100%

18. If you'd like, "close" the slashes with a straight line, using the same color and soft light settings.

19. Using this texture, fill the image with the texture. Set the layer to multiply, 10-30%
Erase it from over the slash brush you just added

20. For mine, I added lyrics to the picture's "theme" song ("Los" by Rammstein, for those curious ones lol) in black, slanted them and set to overlay, 46%. I then masked away the parts covering Richard.

21. OK, I'll wrap this up in one more step, since I'm sure you're bored to tears by now. I added a brush to place the text upon (Ask if you'd really like it lol) and used brushes in black, set to multiply, to fade away the edges.

Whew! Ok, I'm so sorry that was ungodly long.
But I'd really love to see what anyone creates with this :)
