Ravelympics 2010

Feb 12, 2010 20:48

The Ravelympics 2010 starts tonight at 2am UK time, its been challenging waiting for this day to arrive trying to resist the urge to work on projects planned for during the 17 days of the Winter Olympics but one way or another, I have made it. Everything has been planned, re-planned, drawn, made notes, swatched like crazy and now finally the day has arrived when tonight during the opening ceremony once the torch is lit I can cast on my projects and start working on some that have been saved from pre-Jan 12th which was the date Works In Progress projects could not be touched.
My entries are being submitted as part of Team GB and are :
event : WIP Dancing : basically this means any projects already in progress but not touched since before January 12th 2010
I have "Le Boule" toy which is a humpty-dumpty based character wearing a tool belt with four tools slotted in to the sides, carrying a kit bag with measuring tape, note pad and pencil, he has hands and shoes and is very cute / in my drawings.
Started knitting the body of this character in April last year but for one reason or another I only did the two body halves and never got round to finishing him. In January this year I re-discovered this project and made him a tool belt with center buckle and seamed him together around the middle filling him with toy filling. So for the olympics I need to knit the tools and accessories, hands and shoes, arms and legs, then put a face on him. Very much challenging myself on this one, hands are something which I can only guess at since I can not find any examples in loom knitting and only have my knowledge of Jean Greenhowe pattern hands to go on with past experience of knitting her clowns.
My second WIP Dancing event challenge is finishing the cupcakes called "Sweet Angelica Cupcakes" that I started sometime last year. I got as far as knitting six cases but no cakes so am hoping to finish these. It was touch and go for a while whether these could be done because I actually lost the bag with the cases inside that I had saved for nearly eight months. But it turned up just after new Year's so I was delighted to re-discover these but dont actually have a plan on how to knit the cakes, I am just going to wing it and decorate accordingly to get the job done.
Along with the two entries for Work In Progress pieces I plan on finishing, I also have two own original designs planned for the Designer Biathlon event which are :
first we have a large biscuit barrel filled with 20 biscuits, mostly if not all are English classics, Jammie Dodgers, Gingernut Cookies topped with hazlenuts, Party Rings which are ring shaped biscuits topped with crispy icing, Vanilla Shortbread triangles and Chocolate Creams, four of each I think will be nice. The Biscuit Barrel is going to be made from an old two litre ice cream tub covered in knitting and wadding so that the entire project will be machine washable as well.
Second Designer Biathlon is called "The Square Eyed Monster" and is a large character shaped like a retro tv with aerial on top, arms and hands, legs and feet, holding a remote control and tv guide in his hands. What to display on the screen by way of a face is not coming to me in drawing form yet but I am certain it will once I start the knitting.
I am excited about my original own design entries, the criteria for that event is that you design knit and publish your pattern within the 17 days of the olympics. A real challenge there then and one which I cant wait to get started on. I have all the yarn needed in different project bags for each project, looms and hooks ready, the kids are going to let me do this challenge for myself and I promised them treats at the end of it, Imogen has already chosen her DS game!
If I have time during all of this lot I may also enter one of the dyeing events, probably the Downhill Dyeing one which just means you dye some yarn or fibre and add it to your stash with the correct tag to be entered. I was thinking something blue and yellow to knit Harvey a hat with afterwards maybe. I wish there were slightly more days in the olympics and ravelympics events because I have written myself out a calendar and time table where I think I will be able to fit everything in but if I had just three more days I could possibly do Harvey's hat as well. How awesome would that be.
So there you have it, my planned projects for the Winter Olympics 2010 as part of Team GB in the Ravelympics. Cant wait until 2am to get started, it will be a hammer first, been itching to start that one especially as drawing it as a flat shape has proved challenging in itself.

knitting, ravelympics, loom-knit
