Second Seed; [Action]

[If anyone's traveling in the vicinity of House 26, they might take notice of the little garden that's steadily been popping up outside over the past few weeks. Even if it's just another garden at first glance, today one of the residents is kneeling outside in the dirt attempting to change that. In the midst of a patch of what looks like mundane ( Read more... )

nonmagical plants are no good, a project doomed to fail, he's not a very social animal, lost his journal right after getting it, it makes more sense than harry has been, plants are better than people, gardening, herbology: fun for the whole family!

[Having gotten an insane case of cabin fever while she was shut up at home, Hermione's taken to walking outside. She spots Neville pretty easily and walks nearer to admire his work.]

You and Luna are really putting a lot into this garden, aren't you?

[Neville beams proudly at the sound of Hermione's voice.] Thanks, Hermione! I know there's not a lot else I can do to help out the way things are... Figured I could at least make sure we have a good store of supplies.

[She smiles in return and then squats down to examine what he's got going on in this garden.]

So, what do you have already? [As she tries to identify a couple of things.]

[And he'll be pleased to take her on the grand tour.] Well-- none of it's really ready yet. All we could find here are Muggle plants, but I thought some of their genuses might be close to some of ours. [He gestures to the daisies immediately in front of him] I'm trying to work some healing charms into these, and maybe crossbreed them with something woodier, so in a couple of weeks we should have something close to dittany. In case someone else comes back a little messy. [And before he continues on, there's an obvious pause wherein his eyes probe her face for approval or help on his methodology.]

[She nods, frowning, though the frown is a thoughtful one and he knows her well enough to see it.] That sounds like a good idea to work on. Maybe I can help with it, too. [She'd be glad to do something useful and you know Hermione: she overbooks herself all the time.] We might have a nice Herbology lesson out here. What do you know of Muggle plants?

[She's smiling. Even though she's lived in the wizarding world for the last six and a half years, she's still a walking Muggle encyclopedia as well.]

[He grins at the prospect of getting help from Hermione.] I'd love all the help I could get! I'm not too clear on Muggle plants really. I chose these flowers because of their appearance more than any magical properties they might have. [Addressing the rest of the small garden now, he points] I'm thinking of putting some work into the soil for knotgrass, and maybe grow out hedges we could transfigure into spiky bushes... [He trails off uncertainly though, because if transfiguration is involved, there would be less "we" and more "I watch from a safe distance while you maybe show me how it's done and if we're lucky I find a way to not mess things up."]

[She understands the whole Transfiguration thing and she's totally willing. Hermione is always willing to help. Wouldn't be Hermione if she wasn't. So she nods.]

That sounds like a good start. I can try to find a book on Muggle plants at the library if you'd like. It might help you figure out which plants would work best to turn into wizarding ones.

[And failing that, she'll write one up herself!]
