mistful has a Dear author letter of her own, and if you don't already read her (and you ought; she keeps ending up on metaquotes for a reason), I highly recommend her take on editorial letters.

Of course, when the editorial letter first arrives - oh God, it's a great big huge pile of work and she obviously hated your book after all and you are off to the garden.
