So I guess it’s been a little while since I’ve updated this…right now I’m sitting in my room supposedly writing a film review due Monday…but I turned the radio and am currently listening to a wonderful mix that includes juanes, other Spanish pop, and currently I feel like a woman by Shania twain (pulling my hair, doing a dare..oo-oo-o-o, mens shirts, short skirts ooo-o-o…gotta love it) anyways…after Lisbon not super much exciting has happened…school is well, school. It’s such a different change of pace from nd…classes take up a good chunk of the day but I’m not stressed and always thinking about what’s coming up and when I need to be where for this meeting and that…
For example, during the siesta (there are no classes from 2-4 every day) i often push homework or internet time aside to just go for a walk around Toledo and not think about anything…it’s so relaxing I love it. And after class I’ll leave school with every intention of going home and working, but then turn the corner and see some friends at enebro so I’ll stop and join them for 20 minutes or so and “no pasa nada” a study break here and there has absolutely no consequences on my sleep (averaging about 8 hours…tambien un milagro) and sanity levels.
So, I guess I could keep everyone updated on this last weekend which was a trip. Classes ended on Thursday and no one was traveling so we all went out in Toledo that night. Started out by meeting some friends in Pinnochio (not pronounced like the Disney character) in poligono. Had a Shandy (amazing!) some great tapas and then hopped the bus for the boveda and later a discoteca called tsunami. This discoteca was way better than the one we went to a few weeks ago…the crowd was younger, people actually danced and they played Spanish and English pop songs, not this techno and eighties stuff that circulo played. Anyways…we got to the club around 1:30 ish and were ready to take off around 4:30. I had been dancing with this Moroccan guy for a while and ‘drea and Mallory were dancing with his friends. They were pretty cool guys and not creepy like other Spanish guys…anyways…we went to get our coats and couldn’t find them. The guys looked with us for about 30 minutes and we couldn’t find them anywhere…we pretty much knew they had been stolen. The owner of the club told us to come back around 6:30 in the morning when it closed in case it had been pushed aside somewhere…so we had about two hours to kill in Toledo. At first the guys gave us their jackets and said we could go to a bar that was close. Apparently this bar had closed a while ago…so they pounded on the door until someone let us in and took us to the basement where the bar was…apparently I was the only one who felt this was a little shady, so we stayed there for a few minutes…when the Moroccan got up to use the bathroom I talked with the other girls and convinced everyone that going to the Fund would be a better option. We took the coats off and walked in the cold to the Fund. More than halfway there we hear footsteps behind us and the guy had sprinted to catch up to us to try to convince us to sleep at his place instead of the Fund…thank goodness the fund let us in so we crashed on the couches for an hour before being kicked out. The coats weren’t at the club the second time so we just took the bus back to poligono and I called my house from my movil while standing on the front porch until my madre let me in….i guess I should mention my house keys were the only thing in my coat when it was stolen. So…I finally made it to bed around 7 30 in the AM, and slept until 11:30 when I literally rolled out of bed and out the door to the bus since we had to go to Madrid for my art class that day. I was one tired little bunny.
Friday I stayed home and slept and Saturday we kept things pretty chill…we went to a poligono bar and watched the real Madrid game before heading to pinnochio for drinks, tapas and one darn good brownie before calling it a night.
Sunday morning I met pat in Toledo to hit up the free museums. We went to the casa del Greco to see a bunch of his paintings. I’m in love with greco’s paintings…I don’t know why, but I am. Then we walked to a Visigoth museum and then went to mass at the iglesia de santo tome, which was a pretty good mass. They actually had a real choir and incense and all that stuff we normally associate with church…not one of the power masses that are over in 35 minutes here. After that we went to the room of the church to see one of Greco’s most famous paintings…the burial of the count of orgaz…it was really cool to see it and be able to notice all the little things we learned in class. Later, I went running for the 3rd time in a month…I really need to start exercising more often.
That’s about it for now…it’s Tuesday and like I said earlier, I’m killing time before dinner so I don’t have to start this paper that I should be working on. Then after dinner everyone’s going out tonight in Toledo to celebrate Julie’s birthday and so I can hang out with Katie Rose…who decided to ditch out on notre dame to live it up in spain and france..i mean really, who goes to classes anyways? Theoretically I’m going to Barcelona this weekend, but we don’t have hostals or bus tickets yet, so I need to get on that .
Oh…one more highlight…I went to the store the other day and bought some herbal essence shampoo and conditioner...it was the first time in three weeks I had conditioner…and lets just say I actually did feel like screaming in the shower like in the herbal essence commercials…oh the simple pleasures of life…one more simple pleasure…last night both my big fat greek wedding and Vertigo were on tv…two of my favorite movies at once…in Spanish..needless to say I was a very happy shannon
Hmm…what should be my Spanish fact of the day…hmm…we’ll go with valentine’s day traditions…apparently the girls are supposed to give the guy she likes chocolate...then, after having a month to get to know each other, if the guy likes her back, he’ll give her white chocolate on march 14th. Kind of a neat little tradition. Hasta luego
