After reading
Stillill's
Better than Burroughs, a love story heavy with literary and musical influences, I tried to find a playlist of the author's favorite songs. What I found was even better--her
blog on music, film and literature. I've only been following her blog for a few days now, but I've been inspired to start one of my own.
I've phrased that incorrectly. What I mean to say is I've decided to start a running list of my favorites as well, just as a document for myself so that I can go back and see the different musical phases I've been through.
You know that feeling you get when you listen to a song that was long ago your favorite musical creation in the world--the feeling that makes you feel as if you're back in that time of your life again? That's what this is going to be for me, but instead of writing it down on paper, I'm going to post it here for two reasons:
- This being the internet means that I can directly link to songs I'm currently gabbing about.
- This is my way of holding myself accountable for keeping an up to date document of whatever is moving me at any given point.
So begins Phase I.
1.
More News from Nowhere by Nick Cave and the Badseeds As I mentioned earlier, this effort has been inspired by Stillill (unbeknownst to her). Consequently much of my favorite music has been heavily influenced by her. This explains the first two choices I'm listing.
2.
Feeling Good by Nina Simone. First off, her voice is ridiculous--it's like how Toni Braxton wishes she could sing. Add to that the amazing music, and you've got the magic that is this song.

Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine. The first Florence and the Machine song I heard was
Howl, this haunting, bass-heavy track. Her voice reminds me of those stereotypical church choirs that sing a bunch of "soul" for hours on end and make the entire congregation rise up and sway like one big family. The music isn't bad in Howl, but it's really her slurring voice that carries the song for me.

Magick by Ryan Adams and the Cardigans. For the life of me, I can't remember what TV show I got this from, but I think this song and the next one illustrate perfectly this health-kick I've been on recently. This may sound weak by other's standards, but this is about as far rock as I go, and it makes me want to kick some serious caloric ass. That doesn't even make sense, but I know what I mean.

Black Hearts (On Fire) by Jet. Yeah, yeah I know. But it's just so catchy...It's not as much of a guilty pleasure as
Bulletproof by La Roux, okay?

I'm Good, I'm Gone by Lykke Li. Speaking of La Roux (whose freaky-ass makeup still makes me think of C.S. Lewis's White Witch), I just wanted to list one last one. Lykke Li has the kind of voice I have a love hate relationship with; yes, it fits the music and song perfectly, but would I listen to this acoustic for fun? I'd probably go for my seasoned, over-played Arcade Fire CD. But is this song catchy as all get out? Hell yes.
