Margaret Atwoods ``Letter to America``

Jan 13, 2010 22:57

The purpose of Margaret Atwoods " Letter to America" is to show her feelings towards the recent decisions America has made with their recent invasion of Iraq. The intented audience of course is America but to me it should be more towards the American Government its them at the end of the day who make such life altering decisions. I believe Atwood feels disappointed and betrayed  with America for making such harsh decisions by proceding into Iraq without looking at the serious conseqences it will have on their American image, economy and democracy.

Atwood states at one point in her letter how she looked up to America and the freedom they should for. She felt connected to America from their literacy work to music and movies. She quotes many American movies, books, and music such as ``Huckleberry Finn`` , ``Elvis``and ``Key Largo``as her connection to America. Atwood reminds America what they once should for which was, `` freedom, honesty, and justice``and even quotes their own saying on the Statue Of Liberty `` Give me your tired, your poor...``. I believe she felt that America lost the meaning of those words and what they once should for. Atwood also shows her disgust in the way America has violated the privacy of others and even says `` when did you get so scared`` demostrating the change in America.

Atwood states her many concerns with American and Canadian economy. She reminds America that Canada is the US ``biggest trading partner``. And when they go into debt from spending money on war tactics that essentially Canada suffers also.

I think that the idea about this letter is towards the end when Atwood warns America that if they keep up with their war invasions that their debt will rise and their image to the rest of world will be forever tarnished. People around the world will no longer respect them or their democracy. To me this was an erie prediction from Atwood. Couple years after this Letter was written, America did go into an economic depression with debts that were rising and its biggest trading partner Canada also suffered.

If I were to speak with Atwood today I would want to know what are her feelings and thoughts with Amercia and its new president are now. And can she ever forgive America.
