Girls Night In
Abby could hear the dogs barking before she even reached the porch of Ducky’s house. They got even louder when she rang the doorbell, and Abby grinned at the woman who answered the door.
“Hi, Mrs. Mallard!”
The older woman smiled. “Can I help you, young lady?”
“I’m Abby,” the Goth said. “Do you remember me? I work with your son.”
“My son?” Mrs. Mallard repeated. “Donald isn’t here right now.”
“I know that. He has to work late, and I thought I’d bring you some dinner.”
“Well, isn’t that sweet? Come in… Agnes, was it?”
“It’s Abby,” the Goth repeated, but she smiled- today was one of Mrs. Mallard’s better days. She set her bags on a table in the hall and took off her coat, only to find herself surrounded by a pack of small dogs. “Aren’t you all darlings!” she said, petting each one.
Mrs. Mallard smiled. “They like you. Dogs are excellent judges of character, you know. Especially my Corgis. You work with Donald, you said?”
“Yes, and we’re good friends,” said Abby, gathering up the take-out bags. “Where are the plates, Mrs. M?”
“In the second cabinet there. You know, my Donald is a doctor. What was it you do, dear?”
Abby hesitated, pulling out plates and silverware. “I’m a scientist,” she said.
“How wonderful,” said Mrs. Mallard, sinking into a chair at the kitchen table. “I was always quite good at science. But when I was a girl, I wanted to be a dancer.”
“Really?” Abby asked, starting to dish up. “I love dancing!”
“You should get Donald to take you,” the older woman suggested. “I taught him to dance when he was a boy.”
“Really?” Abby giggled, and slipped a piece of food to the Corgi sitting under her chair. “Tell me more…”
