*waves* Sigh, I'm definitely of the thinking that NCIS Headslaps have now gone the way of the dinosaur and that the pc workplace police got to NCIS. *grumbles*
I watched it again last night and appreciated it a bit more I think. I am still not impressed with Tim and Ziva but I do understand your point re Gibbs. I just thought, seeing as he said it wasn't his job to talk things through before but clearly can do it quite adequately, that he might have been more helpful to Tony in that respect but you're right about him allowing Tony to have the kudos at the end. That makes sense.
And you've got it spot on about Jimmy. Now, I'd LIKE this kind of Jimmy but what bugged me was we've never ever seen him before! Who is he? Where did he come from?! LOL!
The Tony/Tim friendship reminds me of that movie "The War of the Roses". When they're lying on the floor at the end of the movie, after all they've done to each other, he tries to put his hand on her as a "we love each other really" gesture and she picks up his hand as if she's going to agree with the sentiment and then tosses it to one side. I think Tony is fond of Tim but I don't think Tim likes Tony much at all! Which is a shame because underneath all the teasing (which I agree is sometimes quite antagonistic), Tony is always nice to Tim when it matters - such as in "Probie". I suppose that's why I was annoyed Tim couldn't do the same for Tony in this ep.
Nope - in this one. He talks to Ziva and Tim and they are suprised he's said so much as he doesn't usually and he says "it wasn't my job before". So he CAN do it - he just doesn't see it as his job to do it usually.
Oh right! I just had a quick look at that scene again. yes.
still not impressed with Tim and Ziva Yes, you're right. They didn't offer much verbal support, although they hopped to it when Tony gave them anything to do.
The more I think about this whole ep, it seems like TPTB really wanted to pile the pressure on him, take away all Tony's normal supports and to underscore that leading was a lonely job, (drinking bourbon alone in a basement with a boat) and also, happily, that there were rewards too in the eventual solving of it.
First, the osake hangover from hell, Tim and Ziva kind of being just worker bees instead of his mates, Abby constantly comparing him to Gibbs and finding him wanting.
I think Gibbs talking to Tim and Ziva is something he sees as a team player's/equals/subs job and that his talking was a sign he was trying to truly inhabit the role (even if it killed him LOL!) for Tony's sake. But not something to do with his leader, especially if he was doubting himself. Leaders are there to be obeyed, not to negotiate with, in his mind, otherwise he'd also be undermining his own authority once he's back in the saddle. Man, Gibbs is such a classic old school strict one for delimited roles. Plus, there are the rewards and he doesn't want to dilute them for Tony (but I'm just repeating myself *g*). Now I can't help thinking of that role reversal in 24/7. Oh, Bear! *hugs Bear* Skinner did talk it out more though when Fox freaked out about all the responsibility.
we've never ever seen him before! Yes! Exactly!
I don't think Tim likes Tony much at all! Yes! Yes! This is what I sense and is the crux of it for me. Tim doesn't dish it out in the same way, either qualitatively or quantitatively, and it always has me hiding behind my fingers a bit. As I responded above to rabican "I like the Mc_____ stuff and nerding bashing as a viewer, but seeing how Tim reacts sometimes makes me uncomfortably aware that I'd get quiet and mean, if it went on like that for years." I don't want Tim to feel that way.
I think Tim has always given as good as he gets where Tony is concerned and he doesn't seem to credit Tony with the good stuff he does and the fun he brings. I just rewatched Agent Afloat and Tim is really missing Tony. He seems to have forgotten that by this ep.
I dunno - I think Tony is a very annoying person to have around but in the same way as an annoying puppy is, always wanting you to play or stealing your food or attacking you because he wants a play-fight. Tim's responses sometimes go beyond hitting Tony over the nose with a rolled up newspaper and are more like a well aimed kick to the balls *g*.
Oh I totally forgot to mention your The War of the Roses analogy! OMG, yes! Perfect, in a painful way, for them! LOL!
Re Jimmy, I just watched it again and Tony says, "Thanks, AGAIN", as if they'd done this before. When? And before that Jimmy says he "stocked up again (the coffee, presumably?), just in case". In case of what? I don't get it! Hm, I'm quite puzzled about this scene. I feel like I'm missing some clever in-joke or reference.
Absolutely right on Tony being more fond too, because when Kate/Ziva/Tim have missed Tony or he's deathly ill or kidnapped, they inevitably end up discovering Tony has done SOMETHING to piss them off. So any reserves of affection they might store up to bring out in needed times is soon torpedoed, by Tony's very own backdated actions. You could suspect that T does it on purpose, to ensure that people don't soften towards him in his absence or when he's vulnerable ... something you have explored actually ;)
I'm assuming Tony went to Jimmy when he was boss last time - but I wish we could have seen him being nicer to Jimmy for the past 3 seasons if that's the case!
And yeah re Tony's personality. I think he's really fond of them but he doesn't want them knowing that and he doesn't want them getting too close to him. Why, is something we could conjecture about forever I suspect *g*. Or just write massive H/C epics about it instead!

Just sitting here thinking about my reply, but wanted to clarify this first - by "before" do you mean Gibbs said this in another ep?
