AUTHOUR'S NOTES

#01 - Ring
As they exchanged rings Jethro considered asking if ‘fifth time’s the charm’ applied in some culture or other, but for once Ducky was lost for words.

#02 - Hero
Even through all his falls from grace Gibbs was always Abby’s hero, and so was Ducky, for all the opposite reasons.

#03 - Memory
Jethro could recite every one of Ducky’s stories from memory, but he liked to pretend otherwise.

#04 - Box
From when they first met Ducky had begun to fill a box of trinkets, mementos of their holidays and special occasions together; now twenty five years later Gibbs was building a bigger trunk to keep them in.

#05 - Run
When Ducky had offered his heart Gibbs had run; not because he didn’t want it, but because he knew he didn’t deserve something so precious.

#06 - Hurricane
The case was so frantic, it felt like everything was whirling so fast around him; but coming home to Ducky was the eye of the storm.

#07 - Wings
Gibbs would never admit it, because it was such a horribly cheesy cliché, but Ducky truly was the wind beneath his wings.

#08 - Cold
With his lover doting and attending to his every whim Ducky almost enjoyed having a cold.

#09 - Red
Ducky always thought Gibbs looked particularly handsome in red, but of course not half as good as he did out of it.

#10 - Drink
For years Gibbs drank to dull his senses to manageable nothing; but with Ducky he drinks to embrace and savour life.

#11 - Midnight
Midnight was his favourite time … nestled comfortably in bed with a good book, a tumbler of fine malt whiskey, and Jethro of course.

#12 - Temptation
Gibbs was sure it was only a matter of time before his resolve caved, then he ended up giving into the temptation and kissing Ducky in public.

#13 - View
Ducky had seen countless views in his life time; but his absolute favourite was from the basement stairs, watching Jethro work on his boat.

#14 - Music
Gibbs had never known how the hell anyone could consider bagpipes music, let alone enjoy them; but he’d grit his teeth for Ducky’s sake.

#15 - Silk
His lover’s hand gliding across his body felt better than even the finest silk.

#16 - Cover
There were moments when Ducky thought his lover was just perfect; but he was soon brought back to reality by Jethro hogging the bedcovers.

#17 - Promise
Gibbs had promised he would never feel for anyone else what he did for Ducky; and no matter how much of a bastard he was he kept that promise.

#18 - Dream
Some mornings, when he woke to the sight of his lover sleeping peacefully beside him, he had to pinch himself to be sure that he wasn’t still dreaming.

#19 - Candle
Ducky lit the candle with a satisfied smile; he knew Jethro had said didn’t want a big fuss for his birthday, surely after all this time he didn’t really believed it when Ducky had agreed with him.

#20 - Talent
Gibbs was a man of many talents, though most were between Ducky and him; after all a gentleman never tells.

#21 - Silence
The silence between them grew unbearable; a heavy coldness which swirled around them and seeped into his heart.

#22 - Journey
If life was a journey there was no question as to whom he wanted as a travelling companion.

#23 - Fire
When they first met their love burnt hot and fierce like a flame, then over the years matured to burn like coals; less dramatic, but resilient, warm, and there for the long haul.

#24 - Strength
Jethro wrapped an arm around him, and Ducky managed to smile softly, leaning against him; as if strength could be gathered by osmosis.

#25 - Mask
Gibbs might be able to mask his emotions and thoughts from the rest of the world, but Ducky could always read him like a book.

#26 - Ice
It seemed as if Ducky was born to skate, Gibbs however was not so graceful; so he took his lover’s arm, laughing as they glided along together, with the children trailing behind them like ducklings.

#27 - Fall
It had always been his favourite time of year, taking walks on crisp days to marvel at the kaleidoscope of nature in her full glory; and now here he was in the autumn of his life, sharing it with his true love, finally content.

#28 - Forgotten
Ducky hated to admit it, but sometimes he had trouble recalling little things like where he’d left his car keys; but he knew that the important things, the details of his life with Jethro, would never be forgotten.

#29 - Dance
Gibbs didn’t dance in public for two reasons; firstly he was, as Abby delicately put it, ‘choreographically challenged’, but the main reason was that for all the progress and tolerance made in recent years it still would be frowned upon for two men to do something so intimate, and he’d decided that if Ducky couldn’t dance with him then no one else could either.

#30 - Body
Many people considering Ducky’s tendency to talk to the bodies of the victims he dealt with to be a mere eccentricity, but Gibbs understood and loved him for it; that Ducky’s compassion and respect extended even beyond life itself.

#31 - Sacred
Gibbs had never been one for religion; but his time with Ducky was always sacred, to which he devoted his whole self.

#32 - Farewells
He’d never been any good at goodbyes, so decided it was imminently more sensible that they should never truly part.

#33 - World
Gibbs may not have travelled the world the way Ducky had, but then he didn’t need to, everything he could wish for was right here.

#34 - Formal
Ducky naturally preferred to err on the side of formality; but for some reason it had never felt quite right for his lover anything other than his nickname.

#35 - Fever
He called late at night, in a fever that wouldn’t break, voice aching and husky with desire; “Duck, I need you.”

#36 - Laugh
Gibbs couldn’t think of a more wonderful sound than Ducky’s laugh.

#37 - Lies
One could argue that technically the team weren’t their family, that biologically speaking Abby’s babies weren’t their grandchildren, but in their hearts they knew it was entirely true.

#38 - Forever
As he made those solemn promises to Ducky, Gibbs knew that this time it was forever.

#39 - Overwhelmed
Sometimes the sight of his lover overwhelmed him with so much love he thought his heart would burst.

#40 - Whisper
Their spoken words may have been a whisper, but their eyes and bodies conveyed their love as clearly as shouting.

#41 - Wait
Ducky had be so angry with himself for waiting, pining, being unable to move on, when Jethro had just so casually abandoned him; but he knew full well that he had invested too much, loved and been loved too much, just to walk away.

#42 - Talk
They had always been able to talk without speaking a word out loud.

#43 - Search
When they met, both men realised they had found in the other something they hadn’t realised they had spent their whole lives searching for.

#44 - Hope
Ducky, Lola, and the twins … with them in his life Gibbs could feel hopeful again.

#45 - Eclipse
On the night of the lunar eclipse they went up to the roof, with the grandchildren nestled between them, and watched as the moon was devoured; Ducky told stories, while Gibbs just hoped the moment would never end.

#46 - Gravity
Gibbs was no scientist but he was pretty sure gravity couldn’t be held accountable for all those times he’d fallen for Ms. Wrong; or when he’d finally found Mr. Right.

#47 - Highway
There weren’t many people who happy venture onto the highway with Gibbs in the driving seat; but Ducky knew he was quite safe, so was content to sit back and enjoy.

#48 - Unknown
So often his life and cases brought him into the unknown, but with his lover by his side that fear was eased.

#49 - Lock
The team knew, beyond any doubt, the nature of their relationship when Ducky moved in and Gibbs finally started locking his front door.

#50 - Breathe
When Gibbs returned to him Ducky finally felt he was able to breathe again.
