Lost Ducky comes home.
DISCLAIMER: "I don't own these characters, nor am I making any money from them. I borrow them once in a while, but put them away tidily."
Ducky did not come home with Gibbs. He stayed away almost three weeks. Late one Friday night Gibbs’ cell rang.
“Yeah, Gibbs”
“Jethro, could you please come and fetch me from the airport?”
“Sure, Ducky. Be there in thirty”
In slightly less than thirty minutes Gibbs was walking toward the baggage pick-up when he saw a very familiar figure standing beside two suitcases.
“Hey Duck, let me get those for you”, he said as he hefted the two bags.
“Thank you Jethro”, the ME replied somewhat stiltedly.
Few words were exchanged between the two men until they were inside the car.
“I have spoken to the Director. She has apparently misplaced my resignation forms. I am to be on staff until they find a suitable replacement.”
The Director seems to be very good as ‘misplacing ’ things Gibbs thought to himself.
“Please drive me to the Reston house, Jethro. I have taken it off the market, temporarily”
Again few words if any were spoken on the thirty-five minute ride.
Once at the Mallard house, Jethro retrieved the bags as Ducky went up on the porch to unlock the door.
“Thank you Jethro” the ME said, “ I will be fine from here on.”
“Let me check the basement and out back before I go Ducky. Just to make sure everything is okay.”
The older man started to protest, but Gibbs was already on his way .
The gray haired agent really did want to check the house as it had been vacant for over three weeks, but he was stalling for time. He and Ducky needed to talk.
Finding nothing in the back yard except one rather startled raccoon he returned inside.
“Ducky?”
“Upstairs.”
Jethro grabbed the remaining suitcase and climbed to the second floor. Ducky was in his room, beginning to unpack.
“Have you secured the perimeter to your satisfaction?” the doctor said without looking up.
“Ducky we have to talk….”
“Indeed Jethro we do, but I am tired and irritable from a rather bumpy plane ride. Tomorrow I will be in a better frame of mind to….”
Ducky was halted in mid-sentence by Gibbs who had strode across the room, gathered him in his arms and placed a rather passionate kiss on his lips.
The ME’s eyes widened and he made an small attempt to back away. But years of longing won out over common sense and he returned the kiss with equal passion.
Clothes and any inhibitions were quickly shed as they found their way into Ducky’s four poster bed.
At three am, Ducky was fast asleep, nestled in the crook of Jethro’s arm. Gibbs could not remember ever being so content. He buried his nose in the silky brown hair and inhaled deeply. Ducky stirred.
“Jethro?” he said groggily.
“Sorry Duck, I didn’t mean to wake you…”
“S’okay” Ducky said as he snuggled closer to Jethro.
Gibbs finally fell asleep lulled by the rhythmic breathing of his lover.
Four weeks had passed . Ducky was still the'temporary' Medical Examiner, but the replacement candidates were few and far between. Rumor had it that most were too intimidated by the thought of working with Gibbs to apply. Jethro was happy, far happier that he had been in a long time. Ducky was too, except for that tiny flicker of something that Gibbs alone could see deep in his eyes.
The gray-haired agent meant to do something about that, tonight. The ME was cooking Jethro his favorite dinner. Even though the Mallard wine cellar was renowned, Gibbs had stopped to get a bottle of simple French table wine. He also picked up something else he had especially ordered.
After dinner, they retired to the den. As it was a cool night, Jethro had started a fire in the fireplace. Ducky was sitting on the sofa sipping an after dinner whiskey. Jethro sat down beside him and held out his hand. There was a small velvet box in his palm.
“Open it, Duck” he said.
Inside the box was a broad silver band with a gold inset of a crown-topped heart encircled by two hands.
“Why Jethro, it’s a Claddagh”
Gibbs got down on one knee in front of his friend. He took the ring and kissed it.
“Ducky, with this ring, I give you my only-ness”, he said as he slipped it on the doctor’s finger.
Ducky, his beautiful blue eyes glistening with tears, the tiny flicker of doubt extinguished replied, “And I give you my tomorrows Jethro.”
(Claddagh-- an Irish ring given to signify Love, Friendship and Loyalty)
