Title: Something in Common

Prompt: Weaponry
Character(s): Jimmy Palmer, Ziva David

“Um, Ziva?”

Ziva David looked up to see Jimmy Palmer standing nervously in front of her desk. The rest of the squad room was empty, and their current case had just been closed, so her expression turned slightly confused at his sudden appearance.

“Can I help you, Jimmy?” she asked.

He hesitated, then said in a rush, “I want to learn how to shoot a gun.”

“A… gun?” Ziva repeated.

“Not that I want to be an agent,” Palmer added quickly. “I don’t. I love being a medical examiner- well, the assistant medical examiner. Dr. Mallard is great, and I’m really learning… but that’s not important.” He sighed. “I just want to know that I could, if I needed to.”

Ziva’s expression softened. “You wish to know that you can not only defend yourself, but those you care about.”

For a moment, the two simply looked at each other, confident trained assassin and awkward assistant medical examiner. Anywhere else, they would have nothing in common, nothing that could possibly bring them together. But here, at NCIS, they had found a surrogate family, something that made assassins share their feelings and assistant medical examiners learn to use guns.

“I will teach you,” Ziva declared. “We can go to the range tomorrow, providing that we do not get a new case.”

Palmer smiled. “Thanks.”

Ziva returned his smile. “What are friends for?”
